Like I said, John Barsnes from RIFLE and HANDLOADER magazine got advertised performance from the factory ammo in his African.
I am sure a guy could get pretty close to 2850fps wiht a 260 bullet in the African rifle.
Although we are pretty much pissing in the wind, since a 260gr bullet at 2720-2750fps is going to hit hard up close and is an easy 400 yard performer, and adding 100 or 150fps isn't going to change that.![]()
I pick up my new baby on Fri I'm looking forward to see how this rifle / cal combo shoots i've been looking for a new bear rifle.
What are you buying? Alaskan? African? Some other rifle chambered in the .375Ruger?
I had a .375 Ruger built, by Bill Leeper, on a JC Higgins Model 50(FN Mauser98) action. It has a 21" McGowan barrel and with Leupold VXII 2-7X33 in steel Talley rings and bases, it is a very good shooter.
Besides opening up the bolt face and extractor, the feed rails, follower and mag box had to be modified. As it stands now function is near perfect. The rifle holds 3+1 cartridges.
With an OAL of 3.4", this cartridge is a perfect fit for the 98 action. Ideally, aftermarket bottom metal would be on order but at a cost of over US$425.00, it wasn't in the cards.
I'll be whittling a new stock sometime down the road. I just have to find a decent blank.
