100 grain for speed goats?

I'd worry more about finding an accurate bullet than if it's 100,120,130, or 140 grains and actually try them at longer ranges to see which ones are best.

Your concern about initial velocity isn't going to change much for you at longer ranges. Some heavier high ballistic bullets suggested by Northman999 may prove to be your best bet. They may start off slower, but they will keep their velocity better due to their higher ballistic coefficient and have less wind drift.

Here is a ballistic table on the 6.5x55. You'll notice that at 400 yards there can be very little difference in bullet drop between the lighter and heavier bullets providing you pick a bullet designed for longer ranges.

+1

Try different hunting bullets and find one that will group. They will all take down an antelope.

If your rifle is milsurp (or has a similar twist) I would be concerned about it stabilizing bullets as light as 100gr. without some serious testing.

The whole attraction I see in the 6.5 is the ballistic efficiency of those long bullets. I imagine that it will shoot better with the longer bullets more commonly associated with medium/deer sized game in the 120-140 grain range.

I would probably go with somehting a bit heavier, not for penetration, but for improved aerodynamics downrange. If your shots will be 300+ yards, the heavier bullet will drift less in the wind (assuming its pointy). 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip would be just about perfect

I'll chime in as well as put my vote to whatever is more accurate with your rifle instead of worrying about weight.

Anything will drop a speedgoat, as long as you put it in the right spot.

Spent this last weekend hunting these speed goats at Med-Hat, only had 3 days as I was on nights for the first 3 days of hunting ,last 3 days of the Antelope hunt, first day we saw 13 bucks and we considered 3 as shooters ( picky picky picky). So we thought we would hold out for day 2. Well day 2 came and we saw nothing, it was if they walked off the earth. Day three (last Day) we got permission to go on another ranch and I took this one at high noon, after about a 200-yd. stock and a 425 yd shot 140 gr hornady sp. I ( Ya No s**t! Lazer range finder) got this guy, needed a finish shot as I was a little far back on the shot but he was going no-where.First kill for the sweed! It was a different hunt for sure .

That's just awesome! Congrats!

Don't forget the popular southern alberta Ditch Parrot( pheasant). FS

And "DuPont's", AKA the Hungarian (Gray) Partridge (not Grey).

My old timer neighbor mentioned DuPont's one day. I asked him what the hell he was talking about and he explained that the Hungarian Partridge was how DuPont made all their money, selling shotgun shells to hunters trying, unsuccessfully to shoot the little buggers.:D

The first year my dad came here to hunt it was a good year for huns. He shot at quite a few, but did not take one. Now my dad is not a crack shot with the shotgun, and he is the first to admit it, but missing those huns sure got him flustered.

The next year he came out, I watched his dog go on point, the old man walk in and flush a big covey of huns; the bugger didn't even raise his 101! "What the hell?" I ask. He says he is not going to waste ammo shooting at those little bastards, since he was not going to hit any anyway. I gave him what-for, saying that if his dog was going to work her ass off pointing birds for him, then he could damn well shoot at them with his crappy wal-mart shells!
