I am interested in latching on to an SKS in the near future, and have been reading every thread I come across.

I have noticed that people think of these guns by country of origin, more than date of manufacture and condition.

So far I've seen people talking about Chinese, North Korean, Russian, Yogoslavian, East German, Romainian, Albainian, + a few others I've forgot I'm sure.

Is there a particular Brand/origin/model that a guy should keep his eye out for?

I think that my SKS('s?) will be ranch rifles/plinkers/varminters, and while I realize that most SKS are not tack drivers. the closer to MOA the better!!

I noticed that Cabela's is selling a nice looking Rissian refurb - non matching serial numbers. Any comments? The ruskie would be my choice as well.

I really prefer the russian SKS. There's my 3 SKS,from top to bottom:
russian Tula 1955/56,this one is a very good shooter, buy it 13 years ago. Mistmached parts, since the stock finish was really bad i have refinished it.

Second SKS is a unissued one, Tula 1953. I have not fired this 1 yet and i will not!

The last 1 is a chinese late production. Buy it 14 years ago. Originally came with a red fiberglass stock, did'nt like it so i put a set of woods instead. Good shooter but my beat up russian still better. All in all, any variants of the SKS is fun to have but my favorites will always be the russian ones.

the original ones were the russian. i wouldnt buy anything else
you can find some in excellent condition here on the exchange forums

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's safe to say that Russian is the best to go for unless you want detachable mags then go for the Chinese SKS-D which are getting harder to find.

I am sure if you are planing to go down that road then your better off getting a cz858.

My 54 Tula refurb shot better than any others that I have had, this includes Chicom, SKS-d's, my yugo & Izzies that I have had both unissued & non refurb. but this is only my experience with the particular firearms that I have had!

I have a Chinese (bought new) and a refurbed Russian that I've taken to the range, and both shot similarly well at 100m. I prefer the darker wood on the Russian and like it a tad more, but any difference in accuracy between these two are negligable.

I have another Russian that I haven't gotten to the range yet (I ordered two when SIR offered pre-orders over a year ago) another recent Chinese mixed-parts gun from SIR and an unfired Yugo M59, which has nice wood and metalwork but an unchromed bore. For price, reliability and historical interest, I'd probably take the Russian first, but I don't think there's too much difference between them.

Fun guns with surplus ammo, and it's worth having at least one.

I just picked up a 1954r SKS Tula matching numbers on everything including magazine although its been welded and re-painted for 5 shots.
The rifle is immaculate. I love shooting it.
Definateley research proved me Russian is the best buy, but my Russian does not have a gas valve. Good solid shooter.
