I was surprised to find out that my local gun shop doesn't have any 7.62x39mm ammo in anything but FMJ milsurp. Sadly you can't hunt with FMJ ammo. Does anyone know where you can buy "hunting legal" ammo for an SKS?

I'm not sure if they ship but the Army Navy Store here in Halifax has it, you could give them a shout, I wouldn't know if there would be any vendors local to you that might have it. - the last time I bought some it was $20/box.

oh forgot their hours: they close at 5:00 pm atlantic time monday to saturday.

Stupid question, but would taking a file to FMJ ammo, and filing off the tip till the lead shows satisfy the law for hunting? Maybe even filing 6 or 8 notches at the end, to facilitate "expansion" of the copper jacket? With a proper grinder or electrical sharpening stone this will take only a few minutes.

Secondly, S&B FMJ ammo actually contains steel core covered in layer of lead and then a copper jacket (Well, at least the 1973 batch of S&B originally bought from Marstar). Is the fact that the there exists a steel penetrator OK for hunting, as long as copper is stripped off at the tip?

Lastly, will mutilating a bullet in such a way make a huge difference to ballistics? In other words, given, say, a deer at 100 yards of less, will one still be hitting the deer in general vicinity of where one aims? I have no illusions about sub-MOA accuracy with milsurp ammo that was in addition further mutilated, but is it "good enough"?

It is not going to expand and just punch a hole in one side and out the other, making it a long grueling task o tracking not to mention total lack of clean kill on the animal. As far as the legalese of it, I doubt a C/O would be happy with it.

Wolf also has hunting bullets in 7.62x39. They show up here and there once in a while.

I would not bother fiddling around with fmj's for hunting modified or not, they usually shoot 6-8 moa in my sks, so if you make some rough soft points out of them, that will probably cut the accuracy down even more. When my sks was new, I was able to get 3moa out of the PP ammo, with the stock getting dried out, it's more like 4 moa with the Privi Partisan ammo. I would get the Privi Partisan ammo if you want to hunt with it. - but I have heard that some reloaders pull the bullets, dump the powder & use their own powder & bullets with the fmj cases.

I live in winnipeg. Went to SIR (now Cabela's) and came up dry. Got any reccomendations on where to buy this Privi Partizan stuff?

I live in London, On., and get Privi Partizan at a local Gun Shop called Gobles. It shoots pretty good out of my scoped Norc SKS to 100 meters. I believe it would make a good round for hunting deer in the bush with shot out no further. I believe they will ship, but not to the USA. Check out they're webpage and give them a shout. Last time I bought a box of 20 a couple of months back they were wanting $23.00 a box. Might get a better price for larger order. Never hurts to ask!
To Fistfull, the OP, check out the link below if you can't find anyone near you that carries Privi. It's not advertised on their website, but they do carry it.

Gobles Sporting Goods.

Wolverine in Virden Mb. had Sellier & Bellot 123 gr SP.

I have some Igman's soft point's on EE right now that work great. As a matter of fact I am cooking the roast right now from the buck I scored on thankgiving from my sks.

The Wood Joynt in Brandon Mb. sold me both brass and Hornady 123 gr. SP bullets. It's a good spot. curtmg, if your desperate for some bullets before deer season I could part with 100 Hornady .310 123 gr. SP. They likely would not take long to get to you by mail.

I haven't done it yet but I'm going to try loading up some 150 gr .308 diameter bullets in 7.62 x 39 to test for accuracy in the old SKS and 858.

GMK Armory here in Thunder Bay has the Privi ammo, I bought a box last month for my nephiew to try the sticker says $22.99 for 20. Just opened the box, no stripper clips.

Thanks, I've got the hornady bullets. The mexican match works as well as any surplus rounds anyway. I'll just take my other rifle, it's not too big a deal. I'm better with the scope anyway :yingyang:.

220gr RN out of a 300WM, deer will get knocked into the next forest. I'll be all ready to use the 858-2 for next year though. I put it off too long getting it ready, I'll just have to live with it.

A friend of mine who has since moved back to New Zealand told me he would take the milsurp stuff and just trim the tips back to shoot goats with in the mountians. Tars I think they were called. He said what you had to be careful of was sometmes the core wouldn't be bonded to the jacket very well. Face it, we're not talking Nosler Partitions here. The jacket would remain in the bore and only the core would exit. This makes getting into a heavy firefight with the goats was not a good idea. One would almost need a spotter to make sure everything came out of the muzzle. He said it happened to him twice.

What I understood is the Tars are more of a nuisance animal, so there isn't much for game laws, so they use the crappiest stuff they can find. Worked OK, but I wouldn't want to get busted hunting deer with that setup. I don't have enough teeth to lie through.

Not a question of bonding, the jacket becomes an open tube when you do this. Very dangerous.

I picked up some Sellier & Bellot 123gr Soft Point ammo at the Canadian Tire on Southland Dr. in Calgary a few weeks ago. Don't know if they still have any, though.
