What I am wondering is will

fit into the pockets of

I know that there are dual-mag puches for M1 carbines that are either slipped onto a belt or on to the butt of the rifle but this seems much more fun and 10 pockets means one full box of ammo.

Hopefully someone with a Garand and a M1 Carbine can help me out.

Regards,

Nick

"...will fit in the pocket but you cannot close the flap..." Exactly. M1 Rifle belts are made for M1 Rifle clips and 5 round stripper clips. Your pinned Carbine mags are too big.
"...either slipped onto a belt or..." On the belt. Having the pouch on the stock makes getting at the mag awkward. Buggers the balance too.

"...lots of evidence from period pics of this being done..." Definitely done. After trying it on my carbine, I've often wondered why it was done though.

I figure it was done in order to always have a supply of ammo with the rifle. Going to drop a duce a soldier would probably take his weapon out of habit but not likely his web gear.

Or, a person only has so much space on his webbing for mag pouches. An extra 30rnds could make a big difference and if the only place with room is the buttstock, that's where it goes

If you don't care about genuine surplus, these guys make great stuff. I've got one of their Carbine mag pouches as well as an M1 and carbine case and a 12 ga pouch.Good quality.

Although interesting for a 'photo op' the M1 carbine mag pouches can't double for 1911 pouches either. The mags will fit but the flaps won't close/latch....

As long as people are still replying...

Where does a guy buy mag pouches as well as a sling/oiler?

Genuine WWII dated M1 carbine mag pouches are very common. More common than the double pistol pouches. They can usually be found by the bin in GI surplus stores and also at gunshows. They are usually quite reasonably priced as well.

not true ther was one type made for the us marines that held either 2 m1 carbine mags OR 2 1911 mags they were the type 3 pouches

I have one here somewhere NOS

"...but not likely his web gear..." A troopie always has his kit with him. Mags and ammo were carried in pockets and anywhere else a troopie could put 'em.
