Yes, that is the mag release. The big square deal behind the mag is the bolt hold open. It's really handy, you insert mag and then rock your hand back to release the bolt.

It part of the rear optics mounting system for NV. I'm going to make up an adapter for is sooner or later. Basically, you put on the mount on that dovetail part, give it a twist and then the springy plastic thing holds it in place.

Hey, I remember those pics.

Once you get used to it, you can drop the mag with the back of your strong hand while reaching for a new mag. It works well.

No ambidextrous safety? That kindof sucks for me, as I engage the safety and disengage the safety on different sides (engage on right side with the trigger finger, disengage on the left with the thumb (I am right handed)). Is an ambi safety available?
