some idiot at WSS is telling people....

A conversation at WSS in Saskatoon at the shotgun counter...

"Hi, Can I help you?"
"I was wondering if you had a Mossberg Silver Reserve in stock? Hopefully in 12g."
"What's a Mossberg?"
"Can you go get that guy over there to help me instead please?"

I fail to understand this persons post!

Everyone wants to get the lowest price possible and yet they complain because the $9.00/hr employee does not have sufficient knowledge to impress you! I think YOU, the WSS customer is the idiot!

PRICE, SERVICE, QUALITY, pick 2, that's all you get!!!

When You, the customer is willing to pay full retail for your goodies, you will find amazing service. Sadly this is not the case so SHUT UP and quit trying to challenge the minimum wage employee's knowledge . If the employee is lucky, he'll find a real job soon and won't need to put up with your crap!. If he is not lucky, there is a good chance he will gain a little experience over the next while and maybe become a better challenge for your mind games.

Oh, I like where this is going...:)

My thought's exactly... I think we touched a nerve. We're not talking about "impressing" anyone. It's basic knowledge that has legal implications.

I'd love to take service and quality... so there's my two but unfortunately in southern Saskatchewan our options are very limited. There is no gun shop in my city. We have WalMart and Canadian Tire. Neither sell rifles or reloading stuff.

If I can wait for something I will always shop through Marlin at Frontier Firearms in Prince Albert... but he doesn't carry the reloading stuff I need... but for rifles and scopes and other things like that... he is always the first guy I call because his service is top notch and the quality is always there. If not, he'll do whatever he can to make things right.

I should add about the store in Saskatoon. There is a beautiful young woman who works the archery counter and I would put her knowledge up against most of the other staff at the store.

I simply question the requirements that WSS use to select new employees and the training, or lack there of, they recieve afterwards.

When you get hired at McDonalds you don't just get tossed on the grill and get told to cook or get put on the till and told to take money. They teach you what to do. Can you imagine if you walked into a McDonalds and asked for a Big Mac and the person behind the counter said, "what's a Big Mac?".

To go back to the OP, imagine if someone with an RPAL purchased the rifle in question and then went hunting with it. Was caught and tried to explain to the CO that the guy at WSS told him he could. If you don't have the knowledge to work the gun desk then there are always shelves that need restocking.

I'll use another example. You go to a garage to have your oil changed in the middle of winter. The guy at the shop making minimum wage puts the wrong oil in because he doesn't have the proper knowledge. IT'S THE SAME THING!

well i get your point but i also see the other side i have run in to many people at wss in Edmonton that were a great help but i have met a few there that try to impress you buy telling you stuff that they know nothing about just one case i had a young guy that i asked to get me some Varget he went to the back and came out saying that they were out but they had lots of Win231 that will do the same job and started telling me that he uses it in his 223 and it didnt change his shooting at all so i can see were the people get angry if you dont know what your talking about then say i dont know and people will respect the workers more and things would just be all round better

just because the place sells stuff for cheeper dose not give the people that work there the right to misleed poeple

Well, you sure don't get the best price at WSS either, so you'd be better off shopping someplace that actually delivers 2 of 3. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to even find a price on 90% of the stuff in store.

Hey Klunk, I think I found the guy you met at WSS!:p:D
The simple instructions to an employee are that if you don't know, don't go spouting off to the customer until you got the facts. And if he/she wants a 416 Rigby to go gopher shootin, sell it to em...
The kind of knowledge you heard at WSS is wide spread. Last year an older guy at a shop out east here told me the reason I couldn't find any 222 Rem. brass was because the U.S. forces were buying up every last bit. I managed to keep a straight face & give him a nod... And got the hell out of there.

WSS hires only the most knowledge staff to sell firearms. I am sure any questions you have they can answer accurately. If one of these experts told you the R25 is non-restricted I wouldn't give it another thought, its a great deer gun. Happy hunting!

:D

Once the registration certificate arrives from RCMP/CFC I would definitely put it on the required reading list.

If that pesky little document says the gun is restricted it would definitely prevail over the opinions of the WSS gurus.

WSS hires only the most knowledge staff to sell firearms.

Do they also keep lawyers on retainer to defend their customers in court from criminal charges relating to "misclassified" firearms??.........NO?......didn't think so. ;)

I think the "smart money" go with the RCMP/CFCs opinion of the firearms legal classification as stated on the guns registration certificate.

Yep, nothing but bad experiences at WSS in Edmonton. I choose to let my money speak for me and not spend it there. Just because some one is making $9.00/hr doesn't mean they are allowed to perform their job inadequately. Every time I went there and asked to see something they looked at me like I had three heads. It was like they didn't want to take my money. I would always get a lecture about how a gun is like a woman and is very finicky and she likes one kind of ammo or another............

On top of that, I had to take a number and wait half an hour to be insulted.

You're not getting Harvard Law School grads with Mensa membership cards in their pockets for minimum wage & minimum wage doesn't buy a whole lot of "I give a fcuk" either.

Don't forget it is YOUR responsibility to make sure YOU are in full compliance with the law.

Telling the judge you were hunting gophers with a restricted firearm because a store clerk said you could is going to fly like a lead balloon.

Always let COMMON SENSE rule the day.

Actually, the employee in question is giving out information with a real legal aspect to it. I'd say that a letter to WSS's head office, or at least a call to the manager is in order. When I worked at Starbucks, I made crap money but still had to know about food allergies. Guns tend to be more dangerous than muffins, so I'd say that a basic knowledge of the classifications is the least one can expect. Especially as salesment tend to influence buyers' decisions.

*That* is common sense. Long may it rule.

I've dealt with knowledgeable staff and meat puppets there. It seemed like a good place (and time of year) to get a foot in the door to the industry, so I put in an application. Do you think another firearms dealer would be more or less inclined to hire someone with WSS on their resume?

That Sh!t just ain't gonna fly. There are some hunters out there with RPALs but couldn't care about a restricted firearm because all they do is hunt. When they go into a store looking for something new and are told that they can hunt with it, why shouldn't they believe the person behind the gun desk. After all, the person behind the desk is the person working at the gun store. Common sense would say, they must know something to be working behind the gun desk and not over in the clothing department or at the main till.

Where else is a person without the internet supposed to get this information from. My father, for example, couldn't get a weather forcast from a computer if his life depended on it, let alone how to search whether or not a rifle was restricted.

When I go to a paint store and ask for non-latex paint, I expect non-latex pain. When I go to the hunting store and ask for a rifle I can hunt with, I expect a rifle I can hunt with.

PS. Lead balloons do fly. You need to watch more Discovery Channel.

Seriously though, have you really tried hunting with an R25? Why not take one home from work as a demo? You do have a non restricted PAL right?

(I assume you meant "paint")

Your right, that's what you expect. However, it's still your responsibility to ensure you get what you ordered/wanted! If you are so naive to expect that an employee of any establishment is flawless and all knowledgable, you are gravely mistaken! Try a trip to Home Depot some time!!

I regret to inform you that I do not not work for any sporting goods store. I have however owned and operated a very successful business and have dealt with all types of employees and customers.
