High Power on the brain

So I was at the range last weekend popping away with my NP-28 and doing miserably as usual, all over the paper. I saw another shooter with what looked like a BHP and went over to ask about it. turned out it was a german manufacture with tangeant sight and waffenampts and all, in rough shape but still running. He said if I had ammo I could go ahead and try her out. Well, the High power fit my hand like a glove and I didn't want to put it down. I was able to shoot about a 6 inch group at 25 yards(only ever get close to that with my buckmark pistol) and needless to say, I was in love. Now I NEED a browning.....

Now, for the questions, will the newer brownings be the same size and fit with the wood grips? I'm going to try to find somehwere to handle a new BHP in Ottawa, but it will be a bit before I scrape up the dough for a new one. On the other hand, will a CZ have a similar sized grip? I know I'll have to try it, but there is nowhere that I know of around here that keeps them in stock...

If there is anyone in Ottawa that has these pistols, I'll toss in a box of ammo to try em!

My machine shop teacher always pointed me to Jason at Jason's GunCo... In Nepean I believe o_O never been there unfortunately, live out in Brockville and never have a good enough reason (for the wife @.@) or time to tour around Ottawa ><

I always found that the CZ75's fit my hand & I shot well with them. That was until I owned my first BHP MkIII. Sold the CZ & never looked back. Now I have BHP's in 9mm and .40 S&W. Both keepers.

Having played a bit with BHPs in the military, I remembered (or at least convinced myself) how well my small hand fit around it. I was really itchin' to get a new one. Living in Ottawa did not lend itself to trying guns out. When I visited GunCo during the summer, he had absolutely no handguns in to fix let alone for purchase that I could try. I think the only thing I could get my hands on was an M&P9 on St. Laurent.

I ended up trying a CZ 85 Combat in Montreal by chance and it was a nice fit (not perfect), but def not the same as I seem to remember the BHP. I actually ended up with a CZ Shadow from Epps in the end. I still get that BHP tingle though every time one pops up on EE.

The Mk III pistols are very nice. Some people, like me get a bit of hammer bite from them but they fit well and are good shooters. Cylinder & Slide make a nice replacement hammer/sear but I have not gone that route as yet. The sights on the newer guns are very functional and they feed all bullet shapes reliably.

My Browning Hi Power has been completely gone over by the chaps at Cylinder & Slide. This is not your retail store browning hi power.

C&S Did the following:
1. full trigger job
2. Tightened the slide to frame
3. Extended Combat Safety (very positive)
4. C&S 'No-Bite' Hammer

Aftermarket Sights:
Installed by a Para Gunsmith - The front is a Heinie and the rear is a McCormick.

I gotta say, Riflechair, that one on the EE in particular of late has almost got me thinking of excuses to the better half why I need to buy it.:D

Those cat hairs had me really wondering though :p.

A few years ago I was equipment control at an IPSC match. Every gun used had to be handled by me, fired by me and manipulated by me. 1911 frames and every variety of uppers, S&Ws, a Ruger, Czechs, Brownings, an HK USP, etc. I have a very strong sentimental attachment to the Browning HP - a pathological bias. The CZ was the only other gun that felt "right" in my hand.

But, handguns are like shoes. They have to fit your hand to be a good choice, otherwise you're just chasing the market.
 
Now for my two cents on the Browning HP. Also have a question for you HP owners.

The one I have was bought in Kenora, Ontario some 28 years ago and according to the serial number was made in Belgium in 1972. I totaly love it, have Pachmyer grips on it since day one and have shot thousands of round out of if with-out too much problem, and any problems I did have where ammo or cleanliness related. it, in my opinion is one of the finest semi-auto pistols on the market. For my hands, it is also a perfect fit. Only problem is I am a south-paw and shoot from a left handed holster and I have problems getting the safety off.

I was told that I could buy an ambidextrous safety from Brownells and have it installed by one gunsmith. another gunsmith said no I can't with that year of pistol. Does anyone know if I can install this ambidextrous safety on this year of pistol or not? anyone know where I can get an ambidextrous safety in Canada?

One experience I did have at the gun range one day was I got the chance to shoot a new M&P in 9mm. I had shot for about two hours with my HP and was not doing very well at hitting anything. I picked up the M&P and hit every plate I aimed at with amazing consistency. I was in love, and always said after that that I would buy one of these M&Ps and the one I had shot wore some really good sights and grips right out of the box. Very nice pistols, and reasonably priced.

You will never be sorry or dissapointed buying a Browning HP and they seem to really retain their value as well.
 
Riflechair, you are an evil evil man, tempting me in such a way! The fiancé would kill me if I dropped that cash right now. Going to have to wait until after Christmas at least, or maybe raid the gun safe for some sacrificial lambs. Ohh, my head hurts. I can't wait to get my hands on one, but the wallet hurts....
