I've been thinking about shortening my 305's barrel and reusing the flashider on the 18.5" or 18.75" barrel.

My question is, can I simply cut the barrel with a hacksaw or must it be done using special tools because of the chrome lined barrel. I have read in the past (and can't remember where) that the chrome in a chrome lined barrel might chip if cut.

What should I do?
Thanks

First, don't mess with it until you know what you're doing, you could screw it up really bad. Second , do a search; there are a few threads about the procedure. Third, I see you're from Uxbridge - wait for an upcoming M14 "Hungry Clinic" in Barrie; not too sure if/when it will be taking place. You may be able to have it done then. I hope to. :dancingbanana:

sticky at top of page,FAQ and tips, help, etc. check it out. about half way down.

I must be blind because I have gone over that sticky a hundred times and have not seen the part that covers how to cut the barrel. I have read LAZ 1's section on modifying the FS by threading it but now the section on cutting and threading the barrel.

Thanks

I'll be announcing year end specials on M14 cut/crown thread work as well as accurizing packages in the dealer section by the weekend. ;)

"You want to be careful when cutting a GI CHROME lined barrel. To do the job professionally, you'll need a lathe, a barrel vice, and an action wrench. Pull the barrel, strip it, and set it up in the lathe. The muzzle end should be supported with a live center, with the barrel also supported near the cut with a steady rest. With a chromed barrel, make the initial cut a bit forward of desired finished length, and plug the barrel at the cutoff point with a bullet. Use a sharp carbide bit and work from the inside to the outside to finish the crown. Otherwise, the chrome can flake off while being worked, and this would NOT be a good thing for accuracy.

Then, if desired, turn a 1/2" X 28 TPI shoulder at the muzzle to fit a standard AR-15 Flash hider. One of Smith's AR-15/ .30 Caliber muzzle brakes could be substituted here. [ Note I said .30 Cal, not .22 Cal ]."

Quick question: when a competent gunsmith cuts down an M14 barrel, is it normally removed from the receiver or are they kept together in the process ?

we can perform the task..... professionally :D , with a stripped barrel , or the complete barrelled action by means of a specially designed jig chucked up in the lathe.

YOU CAN NOT CUT BARRELS IT IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE PERIOD....CALL YOUR CFO AND ASK THEM...Not to mention they monitor this website

If it wasn't perfectly legal, don't you think for just ONE TEENY SECOND that the mods would be nuking threads like this left and right due to the discussion of illegal activities?

Again. LEARN TO READ.

straight from the rcmp site under prohib
"•rifles and shotguns that have been altered so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm (about 18 inches) or their overall length is less than 660 mm (about 26 inches); or"
nothing about not being able to cut
