Hi everyone,

I'd need to borrow a few WW1 deactivated rifles - I have been asked if I could prepare a presentation for a few groups in a School.

As it happens, I'm in the province of Quebec, and lovely Bill No. 9 now prohibits possession of firearms on school property anywhere in the province.

Anyone around Ottawa who would be kind enough to lend me something? Thanks,

Lou

im looking for the same thing here in manitoba for the same reason. was going to post this today as well.

You can't get an exemption or talk to the local cops and explain the situation? That seems completely retarded, but so are the rest of the firearms laws we are stuck with...

I looked into this a few years ago ( pre-Anastasia law) for a QC adult ed school play. You'd have thought I was proposing to put on a live bestiality exhibit... it turned out wooden rifle carvings painted orange and saying "bang bang" ( or "pan pan" in French) MIGHT have been OK if the schiool directoir approved, the police were adivised and a potential audience survey done first. Needless to say the idea was dropped.

the live bestiality act might have been easier to put on

how times have changed, and stupid people have pushed for the creation of stupid laws. Socialism and social enginering at its finest, making people stupider and stupider, but more reliant on the government every day.

Wish I could help you

I'm not even very old (21) and I clearly remember in grade 6 a WW II veteran coming into class to tell us of his time in the war and in a German POW camp. He brought in a good old No 4. The teacher said something along the lines of oh but the firing pin or something is removed right. The veteran said hell no why would I do that? The teacher still didn't mind and let us all hold the rifle to get a feel of how heavy it was. This was in rural Alberta though, different place.

Lou- The potential downside of this situation I feel outweighs the potential good. Too politically charged, particularly in QC.
I wouldn't do it unless I was personally escorted by the principal and the chief of police, with their blessings in writing.

I applaude you for doing this. I am taking a few rifles into a local (Ontario!) highschool in a couple of weeks for a history class. If your school won't allow actual firearms, how about a Swift trainer? At least it's a real historic piece and not just a piece of cut up 2x4.

Its funny that when I went through D.A.R.E (Drug and Alcohol Resistance(?) Education) in Grade 6 the RCMP officer passed his pistol around the class. Pistol started at one end of the class, magazine started at the other, and yes they met up somewhere around center. We all felt special because the grade 7's (we were in their classroom) were outside and they did not get to do that when they did the program. I guarantee that would not go over well now. As I think about it, the officer could have lost his job over it if it reached the top brass. Just think of all the infractions to the Firearms act that were committed.

So how did that go?

The public school board in Ontario would have had a field day with me if I tried anything remotely close to bringing a firearm to class for a history presentation. You couldn't even bring a butter knife on the property without being suspended for a couple weeks and having the police notified.

My thoughts at the time were that "Do I really want fellow students, mostly who do not gave a damn about history in general or their own family history, to know that I have live firearms in my possession ?" I figured the latter would lead to a break in at my house or, least worst of all, exclusion from the social groups because I am a "bad person with guns". Ignorance and a lack of maturity go hand in hand, don't they ?

Sorry Lou, no deactivated rifles to offer.

Whenever I go to show in uniform, the kids ask me where is my gun. I tell them (after confirming with the principal who is a base brat), sorry Ms. J...... won't let me. It reinforces the principal's position. She never fails to remind me that being present as a dad, who wears a uniform, that the kids do realize there is a bigger world than the school fence.

I was thinking the War museum might have some pieces, but then again they might perfer the students to go on a field trip to their location instead.

It really does vary with location.
At my high school, we had a history teacher who does living history events. He came as a Redcoat when we were studying the War of 1812, complete with musket. He came as a member of the CEF in WWI, complete with (live) SMLE. And this was about 4 years ago. I'm sure he would have brought a handgun if it were legal.

If they weren't on strike, I would have knocked on their door! Hope that gets resolved soon... :(

Well, I took a truck load of milsurp "crap" to my local highschool on Friday, including a Mk III Ross, a No 1 Mk III* Lee Enfield, a No 4 Mk I* Lee Enfield, and a few others. I did "show and tell" for 2 groups of students in the library, about 60 kids in each group. I had the rifles sort of hidden behind a retractable wall and when I brought out the first one a girl in the front row almost screamed "You can't have guns in school" and I said "Yes I can". I had the pricipal's permission, provided they were trigger locked, I brought no live ammo, and no students were allowed to touch any of them. I found that ironic since if this were 1914 most of those students would have had a rifle shoved into their hands and told to go use it against "Fritz". The show went well, and there were actually some good questions. I especially enjoyed watching the faces of a couple of students who had dozed off when I gave my gas rattle a spin. I think a few skid marks might need to get scrubbed out of some undies. Apparently the teachers liked it since I have been invited back to talk to the second semester kids in February :dancingbanana: .

bad idea after they arrest you . there going to your house to confiscate and look for other things to charge you with. bring some web gear or a uniform better idea.

I have the perfect Canadian rifle for your presentation. It's a flat wooden plank that they cut into the shape of a Ross. The only metal bits are two small metal cones on top that represent the sights. The only marking on it is the C/broad arrow.:D

Unfortunately I am Waaay south of the border.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the Quebec Government even outlawed that kind of lethal weapon! :D
