264 win loads

Wookie glad to hear you got the H870 to shoot. It works very well for me. When it comes to the H870 I was setting my gun up late this summer for an upcoming sheep hunt and reallyfound it was temp sensitive so I stopped using it. What about the AA8700 sitting on your bench??? thats one I want to try but cannot find. The only other thing I can add is I gave up on the 140gr accubond because I could not get them to shoot as well as the sierra 140gr BT #1730. I also use the 140gr Berger VLD with great success. All 3 of my .264 mags have been throated and my max for H870 is 74.5 and 77.3 of US869. Good luck on your goat hunt!!! 264 and a speed goat a match made in heaven :)

One warning about H-870 from old time 264 shooters,it's dirty. If you allow your barrel to get too dirty,you can increase your pressure,a fair bit,and wear out the throat of your barrel. 20 shots max. A paste of Bon Amie(only Bon Amie) and bore cleaner works well.

One of the guys at the range used AA8700 and found his batch was much faster than listed,and what the AA tech said,in his 257Wby.

A 140 at 3200 is magic-264 cult creed
 
I agree on H870 being dirty powder. I am a 20 round cleaner most of the time anyways.

AA8700 I have found to be slower than H870 in the FPS department. It yields similar results to the US869, both in speed & accuracy.

Seeing as how H870 is so hard to come by now has anyone tryied WC872. It is supposed to be the same just military grade????

COL in mine is 3.495. I believe those #'s were about 100 FPS off. The last time I was out with the 140gr, I was getting 3220 FPS with 74gr H870 which has been very consistant in my testing. I am out of 130gr to try, but they were always in the 3260 FPS range @ 75gr H870.

I would like to try 50BMG with 140gr. Lyman lists 70gr as max though with a 140 :confused:
 
any updates on your .264 loads? I ordered a McGowen 26" tubechambered in .264wm a few weeks ago starting to research loads.....I have lots of RL22, RL25 and H4831........
 
I opened my 264 WM to a 6.5mm-300 Win Mag.

I now get 3300 FPS from a 140gr in a 24.5" barrel. I have more testing to do too!

64gr RL25 with a 140gr will work nice, with that length of barrel the new RL50 may be good to try too.

One guy on another forum claims this is what he is getting from a factory 264 WM Rem 700 Sendero. I BY NO MEANS RECOMMEND LOADING AS HIGH AS HIM. These numbers he has posted are 7gr higher than I was able to achieve from mine before I re-chambered it.

Update on the Sendero SFII .264-

70 test rounds to date with the 140 Berger. I have focused on Retumbo and RL22 with good results. I worked upward with the Retumbo to 71 grains and 3350fps. Worked up to 66 grains of RL22 and 3200fps. The RL22 has consistantly shown the tightest groups and this will probably be my choice between the two. Interesting enough, this is the exact charge of RL22 I currently use in the 7mmRM with a 180 Berger @3000fps.

I have all the reloading manuals and these charges are waaay over the listed max. I'm scratching my head a little bit due to this but all pressure signs in this rifle are within normal. Primers are not excessively flattened, primer pockets are holding firm, and bolt articulation during ejection is like butter. This rifle
seems to have one of the smoothest, easy to clean bores I have experienced with an off the shelf rifle. Also, I'm seating the bullets for a generous jump to the rifle lands.

At these velocities the rifle is shooting pretty tight. From the start the rifle has shown a consistent pattern. From a cold bore the first two rounds go .3-.4 and the third round will open the group to .5-.7. My guess is stress in the barrel affecting POI once the heat starts to set into the barrel. I'm very pleased with results like this shooting Bergers at 100yds. Bergers are my least favorite bullet for shooting 100yd groups.

As soon as I get a modifed Hornady cartridge case for my Stoney Point overall length gauge, I am going to do more testing with different bullet seating depths. Also, I'm going to give the brass a light neck turning and put some time in with the chronograph to check velocity consistency.

I'm still a little ways away from 1000yd testing, but it won't be long.

I'd go no higher than 60gr with RL22 & 65gr Retumbo myself ;) Work up to these #'s. Good luck.
 
Thanks for the info!...It seems everyone is stuck on 140gr bullets why?. I'm interested in using lighter bullets like the 120gr GMX, 129gr IB, 120gr TTSX, 120gr Ballistic Tip, 120/125gr partition.....My rig is going to be a dedicated deer rifle and back up moose gun so no need for 140gr bullets even more so when using Copper and bonded core bullets.

Before you rechambered did you try any lighter bullets?
 
No. I built my rifle planning to shoot 140gr bullets. I had a specific goal in mind when I built the rifle & when I fell short I may have jumped the gun in doing the re-chamber, but at that point I was so frustrated I figured it was worth the try.

3200 FPS with a 140gr in a 26" barrel was my goal. My last 264 WM would run a 140gr out of a 25.5" 1-8 twist barrel @ 3225 FPS. Anywhere from 3150-3200 would have made me happy, but near the end I was hovering around 2950-3000 :( More can be read here.

I understand with the better bullets now a guy can get by with less grains & achieve the same result. I am old fashion I guess & I like the BC the 140gr 6.5mm has to offer. :D

No pressure signs. Accuracy is ok. I was just looking for speed.

Going to load more increasing by .5 each time
Not a lot of room left in the case.

I have. With the slowest powders, I have seen what you observed happen over a 2-3 grain span, and then start to move up steadily. I surmise that the pressure is too low for consistent burns with that powder, i.e. it's not yet "in its range". With that powder, I'd keep adding 0.5 grs until the case is full or you're at about 3150 fps.

The muzzle blast really increased at the 76.5gr load

The spread of speed surprises me.

the 78gr load just started to slightly flatten primer. No extraction issues.
Accuracy of the 76-77.5 is about 1.5" group off of a pillow as a rest.
Powder seem reasonably clean.

75gr of us869 ran around 3010

I think i'm onto something here.
