I have a friend of mine who bow hunts who wants to come up this weekend to hunt with me (I shotgun). I am looking at the regulations and im not sure if he is even allowed to do this. For the 2009 Deer Season it says that in WMU 75 the season is from Nov 2nd-15th and the conditions say Bows, Shotguns and muzzle-loading guns only. But on the next page under 2009 Bows-Only Season it says that in WMU 75 their season takes a break Nov 1 and restarts on the 16th.

Just a guess here, but it sounds to me like You can use bows anytime but from the 1st-16th you can also use shotguns and MLs. Check with MNR to be sure.

"...takes a break Nov 1 and restarts on the 16th..." A lot of WMU's are closed for archery during the firearm season. Too many bozo's that only shoot just before deer season and shoot at noise and movement.

If you're female do you curtsy? :p

IIRC during the gun season you have to wear orange to get to or go from your stand but you can revert to camo once you're in it

I know this is true for bear, but can anyone confirm it for deer season? Not that it really matters what colour you're wearing in a blind or a nice enclosed stand.

The removing your orange once your in a treestand only applies to black bear hunting. If deer or moose season is open at the same time you have to wear the orange even if you are only hunting bear ( Ontario regs, may not apply elsewhere).

Find some and post them.
Everyone I have ever checked allowed you to still use a bow as long as you wore Orange.

In areas where there is a controlled hunt, you can only use a bow if it is specified as a legal firearm. Most controlled hunts are shotgun/muzzle loader only. The late controlled hunt in WMU 80 is archery/muzzle loader. Its the only controlled hunt I know of that you can use a bow (and you have to wear orange).

In Ontario you should check page 59 of the hunting regs... For me in 89 the archery season is closed for the 2 controlled hunts.

80, 85A, 85B, 85C
87B, 87C, 87D, 87E,
89A, 89B, 90A,
90B, 93A, 93B
Oct. 1 to Nov. 1
Nov. 9 to Nov. 29
Dec. 7 to Dec. 31

This week there was no hunting for deer for me at all as I take the Dec controlled week.

Edit...

After reading this on the top of page 59, it would appear as though you can bow hunt during the controlled weeks...

You must apply to the
controlled hunt draw if you wish to hunt with a permitted
firearm other than a bow during the controlled season.

Learn something new every day.

That is incorrect. Read the regs. It makes no mention of bear hunting during deer/moose season. Bear hunters can remove their hunter orange once in a treestand, period. It doesn't matter what else is in season. Just like how waterfowlers are exempt from the orange laws. Bears see colour, that is why hunter orange doesnt have to be worn in a stand.

as for the OP, bows MLs and shotguns only means exactly that...You just have to wear orange. The bows only season is the only one with no orange requirement.

Take your own advice, read the regs. Particularly page 23, the section titled "Hunter Orange", second and third paragraphs. The only exception is for waterfowlers.

Guys,

Just for clarification on this one. With the second week of gun season (Muzzleloader in 92) I wanted to know if I could hunt or not. I spoke to a MNR officer from Huron/Grey County. You can only use approved weapons for the WMU that you are in. Some do not permit bows, some do. You must wear hunter orange and you MUST have a controlled hunt seal. He said in the WMU he is responsible for there is no bows allowed, only shotgun or muzzleloader.
