A Little Help Here, Fellas?

I just got back from the range with my Bushmaster AR15.

For some reason the gun will not fire - the trigger appears to be jammed and the sear will not trip the hammer. The gun is on 'fire', the bolt group will freely slide back and forth - but the damned gun just won't shoot - it's almost as if it is on 'safe'.

Would any of you fellas have any ideas? How hard is that trigger group to take out?

This gun is almost new and has a little under 1000 rounds through it.

Any suggestions/ideas greatly appreciated.
 
Disassemble the trigger group and reassemble. See if that solves your problem. It's pretty easy to do and I'm sure there is instructions on the net somewhere. If not, then I can post how to do it. Is it all original?? Are you first owner? Are all the parts semi auto (trigger, hammer, disconnector, bolt carrier? Check and see if the springs are correctly installed. Any pictures my hay help.
 
Do you understand the mechanics behind the trigger mechanism? The action of the trigger pivoting on it's axis pin causes the front end to dip down and thus the trigger sear releases the hammer.

When the hammer is cocked back, is it being held by the trigger sear (front of trigger) or by the disconnector (hook thingy slotted in the middle of the trigger)?

You'll have to investigate which piece is not doing it's job and why and you'll figure out your problem.
 
Well fellers, I think you might be on to something there...one of the brass I picked up had lost the primer so I pitched it.

If anyone needs me I will be off to Brownells! Bubba will be taking my calls in the mean time...

You guys are bang on the money: I took the trigger group apart and found the culprits: the primer and the anvil had seperated and gummed up the works!

Geez, these guns are sweeet: punch the two pins out, Bob's your uncle, the guts and the primer debris are on the bench...and now all I gotta do is put it back together. If I can find an exploded parts diagram I'll be back up and wreaking havoc at the gun range in no time.

I have been reloading for 20 years now and I have NEVER blown a primer. Sheesh, who woulda thunk it?

How hot were your loads? I had one hell of a time with my R-25, all attributed to too hot loads ( As well as non virgin brass, damn that thing has a tight chamber). I backed them off and now it hasn't given me one problem. use service rifle data and you won't go wrong.
 
They are warm, I suppose WW. I am running 23.6 gr. H4895 under 77gr. Sierra Match Kings. Although this is the max load it has not shown any previous signs of pressure and the accuracy was sweet in my gun.

I am a cheap chit that picks up brass at the range and I was thinking that maybe I got an old one that had been fired too many times or something. In any event I flattened it with a hammer so that nobody else picks that case up and reloads it.

So I am back together now, the gun passed the function check and I am a happy camper! These guns are so easy to work on it makes me want to build one just for the hell of it. Dammitalltohell...if we could hunt with these things I would do a build around the 458 SOCOM or something like that and have some REAL fun!

Just guess at it....I recently stripped my lower apart without a clue, let alone a parts diagram.....I discovered its pretty straight forward to get it back together. :)

Actually I am just loading up some now with RE15 WW - haven't fired any yet though...I have always burned RE15 in my 308 up to this point...
 
i found that fn brass was absoutely terrible for that - one or 2 reloads and the primers would fall out of the pockets- even worse than the filipino stuff- but it's WHERE the primer ended up that caused your problem

You're a fool. It's a brilliant design. At least the theory behind it. The rest is up to the manufacturer and materials being used. It's a genuine space-age rifle, whereas no other contemporary rifle (like the SCAR, G36, Tavor, etc) would exist as it does without being based off of the AR in one or many ways.
