Losing 12-6 status?

I believe a few people got caught in the red tape shuffle, gaining 12(6) with guns later denied registration. IIRC most were either imported between the law passing and the date of enactment, or we not properly re-registered into the new system.

I guess that would be possible during the 95 to 98 period. If you sold the 12(6) you owned before the 95 grandfathering date thinking the ones purchased between 95 and 98 would keep you in.

I can identify with the reregistration problems. I bought another 12(6) when the CFC would not guarantee my grandfathered status as the deadline approached and the new registrations weren't issued. It was a definite hardship.

I purchased a short barrel pistol in 1997 to get 12-6 status. Two years later the cops were at my door asking for the gun. That's how I lost my status.

Realize now that I didn't have to legally give it to them.

In 1997, you would not get a 12-6, that was a hope, that a lot of people had ,but it never worked out.
Only way you could have not give it up is with a lawyer and a bucket of money, which would not have helped, these cases where finally settled
a few years a go, some one here may remember the date of this mess.
And as one old fart to another, you should know about how your 12-6 works.
I had a real problem in '95-95 when the gun that was my 12-6 fell off the computor ( with lots of others) and they tried to tell me that even thou I had others, that one that I had at the cut off was tahe only one to count.
Got fixed in the end , as I had orig bill of sale from the '60's and they
put it back in the system, along with 4 others ( damn)

Watch out, you have to keep the right 12(6) gun that you own because they will say that that one is the one that qualifies you. If you dispose of it, even if you keep others, you will lose your 12(6) status.
Make sure you know which gun is which before you sell a 12(6).

I smell BS.

The law says that you must have at least one qualifying 12(6) handgun registered to you continuously (at all times).

Doesn't matter if the one 12(6) handgun you own is the first or last one you ever owned.............the key word is continuously (no breaks in ownership of a qualifying 12(6)).

As soon as you dispose of your last 12(6) you are automatically busted down to a Childrens Strength RPAL forever & receive a lifetime membership in the Mickey Mouse Club.

Important: Don't let your RPAL expire.......if you do your registration certificates are deemed by law to have expired also & any "grandfathered" 12(x) status is lost because of the requirement to have a 12(x) firearm continuously registered to you at all times.

Safeguard your 12(6) status & you can continue to SHOOT WITH THE MEN !
