In the gun rags I see that alot of SWAT teams and even the Navy SEALS are switching from the MP-5 to short ARs. People from the ammo oracle tend to say that short ARs are pretty much useless since the short barrels do not generate enough volcity for the bullet to fragment (or so they say)... So what is the real world practical use of these (extremely cool looking) short ARs ?
I need to justify buying one :D

it's like a Mitsubishi, look cool and help to attract women when it's pimped but it's still crap ;)

A 5.56 out of a 10" barrel has a lot more energy than any bullet out of the MP5. Better range, ability to defeat soft armor and barricades. That is off the top of my head anyway.

Shorty AR's are just too F***ing loud if you ask me...
I stick to 16" as It's short enough and is legal to take into the US.

Amen

:agree:
exactly. I don't think there's any room for noise complaints at the range. Seriously, it should be the only place on the planet that noise shouldn't be an issue. As long as you use proper etiquette and let those around you know when you are going live....and maybe not firing your .50 BMG under the canopy. Use your manners, and wear your ears. Common courtesy and common sense.

Most foam ear plugs and ear defenders will have a NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) that is the protection provided when the product is used according to instructions. If you are using safety glasses with ear defenders (as most ranges require) you can take the NRR and throw it in the garbage as you are compromising the seal.

According to Howard Leight, half of disposable ear plug users use them improperly thus many people are convinced that they don't work (yet when used properly they provide the best protection short of reducing the noise to begin with).

Now for the short barrels, I think you will find that most of those police and military units are using rifles of >14.5".

I must apologize for my earlier post. I assumed you were commenting that OTHER PEOPLE'S shorty AR's were too loud, when you were commenting on your own personal preference. Jumped the gun-my bad. (Pardon the pun).

The short barrels are for when the zombies get really close, or when they're chasing you through a building and you might need to shoot one handed while you open doors, or drag scantily clad damsels in distress. Sheesh, you guys should know this stuff :D
