Hey guys I have a dilema, I bought a New in the Wrap No.4 Mk2 Enfield, serial # UF 55 A1###x, it is boxed with a bayonet and scabard, everything is in cosmoline and wrapped up.

The question is should I unwrap it or leave it as is?

It's really eating me up thinking that I have something I can't even see!
What would you guys do?

That depends. Are you a collector, or a shooter?

Personally, I'm a shooter, and despise not being able to shoot my guns more. I have no use for a gun that I cannot fire.

You could sell it and buy a nice No.4 Mk.2 that has been taken out of the wrap and shoot it.

I wonder if there will still be some of them floating around in another 50 years, still in the wrap.

You only live once.

Since I can't afford to shoot anymore, I'll send you my Enfield sporter in trade for yours. That way you can shoot to your heart's content, and not worry about possibly damaging a work of art.

Don't remove it from its original packing, you will destroy its collector value. You must only stare at it and dream about shooting it. Get use to say pew pew pew.

Either keep it that way and buy another one or just shoot the bugger like how it is suppose to be used.

Shoot it and I'll give you about $300.00 less than what you paid for it:D Personally, I'm a shooter and collector, but I shoot what I collect. So I'd never buy an "in the wrap" Irish, cause I'd only shoot it and piss away 2 or 3 hundred bucks. I let other people do that for me;)

It's a dilemma for sure...your $800 mummy wrapped rifle will be a $300 one as soon as you fire one round...

Enjoy your shoot! That'll be one expensive bang....could be even more expensive if you don't clean the cosmo out of the bbl first...:D

I am not an expert in Enfields but the fellow I bought it from told me it's not an "Irish Contract" gun but one made for Australia, I was told that the above mentioned serial numbers are what identifies it as such.
Does that make a difference?

The "Irish Contract" No.4 Mk II rifles were ordered from Fazakerley by The Republic of Ireland, but for any number of reasons were not delivered. They sat in storage in UK until sold for surplus as we know them. Stratton writes that order was 50,000, PF 309348 to PF 359347. That arsenal was making rifles for the British govt and anyone else that wanted them. Australia is not on the list.

Stratton pegs your No.4 Mk2 Enfield, serial # UF 55 A1###x, as one of 21,000 British war reserve unissued rifles. Yours is in the middle of the UF 55 A###xx range.

Kinda like having a girlfriend that tells you she is a virgin! Ya wanna unwrap her and squeeze a round out of her but that would spoil the value... what was I talking about again? I forgot!!!

Tough choice, I say sell it to someone who wants it in wrap and buy a nice one already unwrapped to shoot.

BTW, this may have been a MBR is the 40's but I'm pretty sure this goes in the milsurp section. ;) The mods must be getting slack because there's a ton of milsurp threads in the MBR section, or maybe the MBR crew are getting bored talking about M-14's? :p

The wrapped rifles are becoming exceedingly scarce, within 5 years I'd say they will be commanding really outrageous sums (they've gone up more than $200 in the last couple of years). Leave it wrapped and it will continue to increase in value, unwrap it and it starts to lose value. Personally, I'd buy a nice shooter.

If it was me............ I'd shoot her! I mean if it was worth a couple thou. all wrapped I'd leave it, but 800?? I think I would go CRAZY not shooting it.

Anyways, It's a dilemma I wish I had.
