Nugget's 721 300H&H is a BIG hit.

......His Grampa had one, back in the 60's and even went to Africa with it. Nugget inherited the Impala and Gazelle when the old boy passed on but the rifle had been sold after the safari when times were tough for a spell. No record was kept who got the rifle, much like many heirlooms that dissappear.

It got the wheels turning in my head, to find him a nice replacement and did we find a nice one!:) We had his birthday party set early so he could use the gun this fall, the whole family chipping in to help with the purchase.

A big thanks to Rembo for refinishing the stock and adding a new pad. Looks pretty good if I do say so myself. And also to Kimberman for the Weaver V7 that fits the rifle perfectly, in size and in classic looks.

First off, a photo shoot from late this summer. I'll add in the hunt from the weekend later. Took these west of Rocky by Abraham Lake. The Government was doing a controlled burn to slow down the pine beetle hence the smoky haze and orange hue to the lighting, made the wood on this gun really come alive although in person it is not near this blonde but a medium walnut brown. By far the nicest grain I have seen on a 721.

Built May of 1951 aside from a bit of wear on the sharp edges she is almost like new and feeds like you would expect that long tapered case to, like glass.

Saturday morning found us out on the home spread with elk in the crosshairs. Nugget got to fill his draw permit with one off hand shot at 167yds. The 200gr Accubond took out the spine and some lung. Down she went right then and there. Considering the circumstances up to that moment we did pretty darn good.

She needed a finishing shot which Nugget used my 25 Remington to ease her passing. Then the work began. Hope you enjoy!

Shot was from the far end of the cutline in this pic. Hard to tell but from where he shot there was no room for error. The kid can shoot.

gotta like that....that one went to a good home.....:)..it's seen more action than I could have given it in five years....:D

I expect it to see alot more use, it is his current favorite.
And don't worry, it shoots very well and is not picky about what it is fed so far.:)
He still has a Muley doe draw, his general Whitetail and then Wainwright to try as well. Any guess what gun will go?

His Grampa also has the Browning BAR that he has used for many years. It still looks like the day he got it (minty) so the 721 is in very good hands.

Not often the boy is caught speechless, you should have seen his face when he pulled that rifle out of the gift box. He just kept saying wow the rest of the night and would not put it down. I think Mikey likes it!:dancingbanana:

A most enjoyable post and awesome pics !
I've used the twin to Nugget's 721 since the '70s and as you guys have proven, the old 300 is still a dependable freezer-filler... :)

Well done fellas !

Wow  that old weaver looks pretty good on there! Even with those weaver rings. Pretty cool looking outfit. Those 721's are darn good rifles and pretty hard to beat IMHO and the .300 H&H is an awesome old cartridge too.

Love it when a plan comes together.

Congrats on the nice rifle in a great caliber. ... and a successful Elk Hunt

Nugget is a pretty lucky guy to have such a great BIL! Congrats on the rifle and the elk Nugget!

My Birthday is coming up as well Noel, just something to keep in mind ;)

I think it would be on my list too if there was a need for another rifle.
The first cartridge I fed into the chamber went so smooth I had to double check it actually went in.

Only thing I've felt that was smoother is my Krag.

Take it easy you guys, this thread will start to look self serving! LOL

There is only one way to cure the addiction of buying guns, and that's to buy guns for someone else. In other words I haven't found a cure.

My name is Noel and I can stop buying guns...if I want too......:p

Ike, send your wish list by PM, better get me the contact numbers of your family members so I can get funds arranged.:D

Called Nugget but he just moved into a new house and has no Interweb access so I may as well tell the story......

Saturday morning I am heading out to our back field. If any recall the neat little buck I got there four years ago, I have been since a big fan of sitting back there and letting them mull around on their own. Trouble is no deer around this year at all and I have no idea why.:(

I jump the back fence into the calf pen, carrying the 1100 Husky for the elk and my little pump gun in case a deer comes by close and of course the trapper nelson on my back. The calves stir up a bit as I walk through them but they don't make to bad a rukus. Top strand of the pen fence is popped loose from the Elk calves going through learning the tricks of the trade making for easy crossing.

Soon as I get across I can see there are no deer in the alfalfa but when I scan south to our bush quarter there are two tan bodies standing there. Doh!
I get down on the ground. It is still before legal light but I can tell they are Elk but no antlers are visible even with binos so the waiting game starts in hope a bull is there, just out of sight but no dice.:(

I do the next best thing and that is try to find out where Nugget is (he was supposed to be with me):slap: Call his cell, no answer, call the house and wake up my sister, "Oh yeah, is this his wake up call? He's still in bed.":runaway:

He gets on the phone and I give him an earful about where he should be and it ain't in bed. Let's see, late night hockey game or hunting and having meat in the freezer, lets see.....

In the mean time I'm pinned in the field for another 15 minutes feeling pretty chilly in stiff breeze. The elk jump the fence and go in our bush quarter which is near impossible to penetrate and not push everything out in front of you.
Then to make it better I hear a gunshot from that direction. There is no one who has permission to be in there again.

So I call Nugget again and he's ten minutes away. I head to the fence where the one cutline goes across in hopes of seeing a trespasser while waiting for the BIL to show. Instead out steps a cow elk and I cannot believe my eyes. I have hundreds of hours logged in that patch of bush and have never seen them in it before, just recent evidence.

Finally here comes Nugget and I motion for him to RUN!!!!!!!:D She steps off the line just as he gets there and I figure we are done for the day. Five minutes pass and we are still there trying to get a plan. I look down the line and another cow's body materializes through some spruce. Nugget can't make it out so he gets the gun up and I point his barrel where he needs to look. Now he's got it figured.... and the rest is history.

That there is the craziest way to get a tag on an animal I have witnessed.
Happy to say the other shots I heard were on the neighbors property, it was just the echo bouncing around I guess.

Got a call from Nugget this morning and he just got a button buck with his four year old boy. Used his Kimber this time, it's first shot at game and it was a bang flop offhand again at 180yds. He's doing pretty good this year.
