Is a Harris bipod REALLY worth the extra money?

I had a Shooters Ridge bipod on my .270 for Mule deer this year and on the first day out the retaining nuts on the top of both legs loosened off and departed the fix. To the company's credit, I emailed them and replacement nuts are forthcoming. I also have a Harris and will be using that for the rest of the season...

I have a Harris with Coretac Pod-Claws, top notch, a little more expensive, but when you take into account that you are putting it on an expensive rifle, why cheap out? The leg notches are awsome and super solid. With Coretac's wide range of mods you soup one up for a few extra bucks, it's totally worth it. I wouldn't think of putting anything else on my PGW Coyote, except for maybe a Parker-Hale.

Exactly. I'm about to dump a $1k on a McMillan stock - I picked up my Harris at P&D for $160'ish. Minute investment, in the grand scheme of things.

This is reminiscent of guys buying "super sniper", modestly expensive rifles, and loading Bushnell Banners on top of them...:kickInTheNuts:

Man you will not be disappointed with a Mcmillan, I know I'm not, top notch gear.

Now Im a cheap bastard (mainly because I dont have allot of disposable income) so I'll try to find deals if possible since I can't just go out and buy the best of the best. Someone gave me a Harris Bipod knockoff so I just threw it onto the VTR (which happens to sport a Tasco Varmint since the Bushnell I put on there was a lemon :p). On the 20 shot, the bipod FLEW off the rifle! The recoil from the rifle broke the metal "clamps" that attach to the sling swivel! I picked the thing up and tossed it out right then any there. I'll go buy a real Harris Bipod now.

Now Im not saying everything that is a clone is crap (Norinco are clones and can operate just as well as some of the real) because I have used some "clones" that have operated just as well as the real without problems.

The problem with clones are is you have a higher chance of getting a lemon. So instead of going out and spending $50 from a "Harris Style" Bipod from Honk Kong just spend the $150 and get a real one locally.

Keep your eye on the EE. A non-swivel harris can be picked up for 70ish dollars

I have some Shooters Ridge on smaller calibre rifles but they are in the process of being replaced by Harris which is by far the superior. I have a Harris on my Sako TRG ( use #6 adapter ) and it is more than adequate - steady and nothing comes loose.

I have had both the Harris and the knock offs, they are almost the same except like mentioned above everything is just a little cheaper on the knock off. You can always modify either of them from Coretac in Missasuaga, it now has a larger attachment screw, a swivel ratchet system, a Phoenix foot adapter and feet, it's now twice as much but twice as good no joking. With that said I am currently looking for something lighter and better, I also found that buying the lesser of the two will have you going back for the other one in the end anyways. So yes I think for the extra cash it's well worth extra quality, but they do do the same thing.

About $120 at Coretac which is a fairly standard price, but they have all the other goodies.

love the clawed one :p

Forgive me for answering a question with a question but...

Is a leupold really worth the money?
Are fancy rings really worth the money?
Is a custom rifle really worth the money?
Is a big gun safe really worth the money?

When it comes to firearms related products one rule will always apply : You get what you pay for! A cut in price usually means a cut in quality.

What you need to decide is how often you plan to use the bipod, and do you want it to function flawlessly during that time and forever more.

If your just plinking a couple times a year, theres not much point in spending the extra coin. But, if you are going to use it more than once a month for all styles of shooting, then there is no reason to cut costs, the extra $$$ will be well spent.

For the record, I own a harris, and the build quality is great. I have no issues with the bipod and would never consider getting a cheap knock-off. My experience so far is that the extra money is always worth it when quality is at risk.

you get what you pay for , I have always found

I use to buy cheap and then upgrade to quality, now I just save up and buy quality the first time around its cheaper that way ... I have two harris bipods with leg notchs and swivel base they are perfect for shooting on uneven ground. My dad has had some for over 30 years still look and work like new.

If you don't buy cheap the first time, then how on earth can you appreciate quality when you finally need to stump up for it? :D
