Okay... new to me refurb SKS:

Can't get the retaining cross pin out of bolt to free the firing pin.

Advice, please and thanks?

I have given it a few tentative taps with a drift pin, with no success... I thought I'd best check with the experts before I brought out the bigger hammer...

;)

Cheers,

Neal

Is the pin peen a little larger on one end? If yes, tap on smaller end, if no, hit harder. I am assuming you are using a proper sized punch.

Copy all that: I suspected that was the case, but just wanted to make sure that I didn't need to make sure the pin was all the way forward, or rearward, or whatever.

Cheers!

NO hammer/punch combo was enough to drift the pin out on my bolt and I would try every kind of penetrating oil and degreaser/cleaner available to loosen it up.

In the end:

Find a short machine screw(Flat tipped) the same OD as the pin punch.
Use a 1" thick chunk of wood with a 1/4" hole in it.
Line up the "exit" side of the cross pin with the hole in the wood,
Same for screw on the other end of the cross pin

Put the whole thing in a vise(C-clamp if you don't have a vise) to press it out, and Presto! Worked like a charm.

Good way to save your fingers too in case the hammer blows don't fall where you intended.
