I just bought my dad a rifle for christmas, its an old cooey model 71. from what I understand the cooey's were winchesters canadian line of rifles? Would this model 71 be the equivelant of a winchester 710? It is chambered 30 - 06. It is a fairly small, light gun, only 39 1/2" long. I Haven't really been able to find too much info on this gun?

Welcome aboard!
What I can remember about the 71 is that they were a close copy of the Winchester 70, not 710 (Read-Remington 710). Great functioning rifle, some don't care for the blind magazine.

I took it out for a few rounds today, and it shoots pretty good, 1" or better grouping at 100 yards. I think I might even like it better than my ruger 300 mag, because it is much shorter and lighter.

VI Hunter; Cooey M71 and Winchester-Cooey M710 are basically the same rifle, as you proposed. The action is a bit of an oddball, being round on the bottom like a 700 Remington [Not flat like a M70 Winchester] Bolt & Trigger assemblies are like the model 70, but the safety is not on the bolt. These are usually good shooting rifles, and were issued in rifle and carbine length barrels. I have a 710 chambered in 225 Winchester. Regards, Eagleye.

Bought one new in the late 60's in .270. Would shoot into 3/4" regularly with hand-loaded 90 gr. Sierra HP's. Not a fancy rifle, but very effective & totally reliable. An acquaintance still has his in .308 - 22" bbl and about 43" overall.
Sounds like you have either a shortened barrel or perhaps a "carbine" model.

Yes, Winchester bought out Cooey Canada to form Winchester Canada. Which was bought out by Lakefield.....which was bought out by Savage....

Cooey also made some "house brand" guns for Eaton, CTC etc.

The 71 is the original Cooey-Winchester version of Winchester model 70.
( Lower cost Canadian Made, in Cobourg Ontario. ) Manufactured from 1966 to 1968 then became the 710 and was discontinued in 1972. it was chambered in 225win, 243win, 270win, 308win and 30-06 govt. Great rifles, I have 225 that shoots very well and I am looking at a 243 that will likely find it's way to the locker after the new year. Some day I hope to have them all and an extra to build a 257 Roberts. (Oh no not another one.)

I have a model 71 cooey 270. It given new for my 14th birthday in 1963.Mine cloverleafs at 100 hundred yards with hand loads.Mine has the model 70 action.

What is a fair price for a model 71 that's in good to better condition? OK, I have one, just trying to find out the value. Its a .308, walnut stock and above average condition. Thanks

I had the .308 carbine version with flip up sights, very handy (light, short) and reasonably accurate rifle (1moa without effort). Think it was around $325. Good rifle to shoot, sold it when something came up but will likely have another at some point.

Mine's a .243. Restocked it with a Win M70A stock(recoil lug slot needs to be opened aft about 1/8". The trigger guard from the M71 stock has to be used. Trigger's too long for the M70A guard. Rear action screw only. Otherwise, it drops in.), glass bedded it, did the trigger and black phosphated it. Shoots minute of deer, consistently. Rifled for heavy bullets.

Value...$300 - $325. Cooeys are not known for any collector value, which is a shame because they can be incredible shooters. I had one in .270 Win.
