So I managed to get out this morning for a hunt. Everything has been hectic with the move and all, but I've managed to get out twice including today.
I had started out this year with an itch to see how leverevolution perform on big game. After a cancelled trip where Ihad hoped to test the cartridge, I shot off all but 3 rounds, just at targets and what have you..
I had three rounds with me this past Saturday and wished i had more as there were lots of coyotes on the go. My buddy offered me 2 boxes of Federal Power Shok 170 gr that he had and didn't have a rifle for. So I said sure and quickly resighted. (Not a whole lot of difference though)
So fast forward to this morning.
We head out to an area we know well and set up. We are rattling, grunting, bleating, ... you name it !
and zero action. At 9:45 we stand up out of our nooks and have a chat on what the next course of action should be. Jody says we should saty til 10 and then move on,...
just then we hear a noise and look back...through the trees I see a whitetail doe, she runs in and then I see a wolf running out of the stand of trees.
It was all pretty strange... and if someone had asked me what I thought was happening, I thought it looked like a doe just chased a wolf out of a thicket.
Knowing little about wolves, i have no idea if that would even happen, but that's how it looked to us. I had a round chambered, half #### safety as we talked outloud about what we had just seen.
and just then,...while talking, I see something down the cutline...
it's a Buck !

In mid conversation I raise the rifle, and full #### the hammer,..Jody has no idea what I see or am doing,....
BANG!
194 measured yards down the cutline, a nice sausage buck had just had both lungs destroyed, but is still standing with his head held low now...
If you are the ethics police, you may wish to stop reading here...
Knowing he was hit, but no idea how well, I work the lever..crosshairs on target, pull the trigger...
BANG !
170 grains to the head and it was over.
Now Jody has realized what just happened, and his eyes are like saucers
"Where did the buck come from? How did you see it? That's a long ways away? You bastard!!
"
A handshake and we were on our way to the animal.
If you are the picture police, and like pics where the animal is being worshipped, there's a makeup crew for the hunter, and logos are a must,..then stop now. The few pics I do take are accurate ones, they are the reality of my hunts not magazine covers...
In the pics, take a look at what the bullet did at roughly 200 yrds,... it performed absolutely spectacularly for both shots.
I don't trophy hunt, ( I like a good buck or if it presents itself, but a doe is fine) rather I like having some good meat and enjoy the hunting in itself as well. This deer was a bit of a pig when we got him skinned,... there'll be no shorter of sausage, that's for sure
By the way, both shots were off hand with a marlin 336 RC, shooting 170 grain Federal Power Shok, with a 3-9x scope mounted on Ironsighter see thru
mounts...
In the last pic, my little guy is quite curious about the ears on the deer
