New to hunting. Coyotes?

I've never been hunting and with a bounty on coyotes I figured there's no time like the present. I think I've got things mostly figured out for gear but I'm not so sure about method.

Since I don't have family members who hunt should I look at some of the "how-to" dvd's that are on the market? I'm wondering about things like choosing shooting positions and the different calls.

I did some searching and found a few people in the States recommending Darrell Holland's video called "calling coyotes like the pros" for a comprehensive summary of things to know.

There are all kinds of DVD packs with calls and calling instruction, The one I bought is a Primos, 2 calls and a DVD was like 22.00. Wholesale should have a very good selection in your city. FS
 
Coyote hunting in Saskatchewan just got better too Evan! Province is paying you $20 per song dog. I just found out this morning and im still smiling about it! If you wanna learn watch predator quest on wild Tv
 
the old coyotes are going to wise up quick, I would learn tactics of highly pressured dogs first. There are going to be alot of educated coyotes out there this winter with all the noobies hunting
 
predator masters forum is the best source on the net. The Americans hunt them hard in most states and have developed different tactics to get a wise old dog within shooting range.

Yeah, you're right. It would probably be better if there were no new hunters and the tradition, knowledge and culture could die off a little more each year.

No sarcasm intended but if the reason someone wants to start hunting is because of a bounty,your hunting for all the wrong reasons.The downside to collect the bounty on the dogs is you have to cut the paws off them and dont forget coyotes are loaded with fleas and guaranteed you will get some on you.Other than that good hunting.

Other than enjoying shooting and the outdoors please explain the correct reason for hunting coyotes.
 
Check out longrangehunting.com. They have a whole section dedicated to coyote hunting. And if you call them in but can’t make the shot you are best off to let them go and not spook them. Like the guys said before the old dogs get smart quick. And don’t get aggravated if you don’t call them in at every stand. Remember that they have to be there in order for you to call them in. Once you call the first one in you will be hooked. Have fun.

Thanks, that's good info. I've been reading a fair bit and it sounds like it can take a while before you get a solid idea of which locations will work and which will produce nothing. I still have a healthy respect for animals in general so I won't be taking any shots unless I'm as certain as I can be about the outcome. I like spending time at the range too, so I should have a good handle on what I can do.

Thanks to everybody else for the suggestions too. I'm going to stop at WSS on the way home today to see what they have for dvd's.
 
Eastern Ontario's coyote and wolf population is high and the deer population is down. Lets get the yote' and wolfs down and the deer population up, that's why I'll be hunting the varmits. I have no lost love for those baby deer eaters I will shoot one even when I'm hunting deer, everytime one of them go down that's one for the good guys. In case you don't know and you live in Eastern Ontario some of the WMU have yote and wolf open 12 months of the year. Thats right you can hunt 12 months of the year so check your WMU hunting regs.

That's the case in SK too, and part of the reason for the bounty. I could have just ignored .17's comments about the "right" and "wrong" reasons to hunt but sometimes I find trolls hard to resist. Especially when they're comments are aimed at embarrassing or discouraging new shooters.

Hey, I'm just a newb to hunting, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the same as fishing, which I've done since I was a kid, and my family has done for generations before me. Sure, it's fun, but more importantly, it puts a resource on the table - in the case of deer and ducks, food. In the case of coyotes, lucky SKers can now make $20, and more power to them.

By your logic, trapping should be illegal. I find trapping unpleasant, but I'm all for people who do it.

I have some family members who hunted not just for food in the past, but also to put money on the table - bounties made a big difference in a family's cash flow in the economically depressed Maritimes. Good for anyone who can keep that up.

Mind you, I'm not advocating the kind of market hunting that almost cleaned out ducks in the early years of the last century - that's not sustainable. But nobody will be sad to see a few less coyotes.
