I usually come from the closer is better crowd..but on recent Mule Deer hunt I had to pass on a couple of Monsters because they were beyond 400 yards.

I am comfortable at 400 yards and under with my 7mm Rem Mag in Ruger #1, and last year I took a 180pt. Mulie @ 328 yards. The rifle will shoot MOA when shooter does his part and I was using a Burris B.Plex scope. So I simple used the 2 hash mark and hit him 2 out of 2 times. 1st was through shoulder and into both lungs, 2nd was through neck as a finishing shot.

The Savage is coming in 6.5x284. I am interested in info from anyone that has used 6.5mm for Deer at the 5-600 yard range.

Also what is barrel life of hot loaded 6.5x284?

The Savage Arms has a video on front page of Website of field shooting out to 1100 yards at small steel gongs....pretty impressive to say the least.

http://www.savagearms.com/

Of course a 500-600 yard shot will be prone, bipod, range-finder, and shooting at an undisturbed calm animal in a no crosswind situation.

Please no comments about unethical shooting.

in fclass competion it is 800 to maybe 1000 but that is in comp.in a hunting rifle it should be abit higher because you are not shooting 17 rounds in a row and the barrel will not get as hot it is a very good round for longrange

Your 7mm loaded with a 168 Berger, to the proper fps, will shoot flatter and hit harder than the 6.5x284. Get yourself a scope with mildot/target turrets, practice, make up trajectory/come-up tables and you will be good to go. 168 bergers, 215M or CCI250 primers, Retumbo powder.

The 6.5x284 does not need to be loaded hot to work well, 29-3000 fps. with a high bc bullet (berger 140 VLD). Barrel life will be over 1000 rds. easily, s long as you do not over heat it.

:agree:

Well, except for the Bergers, but anyway.

But then again, don't let us talk you out of a new rifle!

At first I thought Savage was only going to offer this rifle in 6.5x284.

But after further research I have found out it will be offered in .25-06, 6.5x.284, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag.

If it is available in 7mm Rem Mag that is the cartridge I will choose(or possibly the .300 Win Mag)....and yes I am going to try Bergers because of the high B.C. I have ZERO complaints about the 160gr Accubonds...loaded to 3000 fps they are accurate and hit like a freight train.

From what I have been reading the 6.5-284 will give you about 1000 rounds before accuracy starts to fall. I have never owned one, would love to have one but its not the friendliest round for bbl's

Cheers!!
