Anyone have any thoughts on the Mossberg 4x4? Cabelas has a nice looking package deal (scope and rings included). Looks like a contender for hunting on the Wet Coast.

I was looking at one at my local hunting store and there is quite a bit of play at the bolt, it was also laminate so it would be a bit annoying to pack around for awhile. Ive heard they are accurate tho. I was looking at cabelas aswell and they have the 100 atr for 270. Dont know anything about those tho

They work alright, I'd say I get groups a little over MOA with factory ammo (.270win). I've had no issues with mine(Actually all the people I've talked to who own one have never had any issues), but soon someone will come along with the "ATR train wreck" thread to show you how horrible they are, and that if you so much as think about buying one it will blow up in your face.

For the money though, I honestly think you could do a bit better, look at the marlin XL7/XS7, or the savage packs.

STAY AWAY. Heres why.

So my buddy went to go elk hunting a few weeks back. He was out and he seen a group of elk walking through the field to the right of him. So he lifted up his gun rested it in his shoulder. And as he was lifting it up the stock broke right in half at the pistol grip. Now he was mad thinking he got a faulty rifle with a bad stock. So he goes to buy a new rifle or stock(which ever he can get), So he goes to the gun counter and was talking to the man behind the counter and showed him his rifle. Now the guy behind the counter told him "The same thing happened to another local guy around here with his 30-06" and so there it started. I guess the guy with the 30-06 didnt fair to well. So i guess the guy with this Mossberg 4x4 in 30-06 was taking a shot at elk too and when he fired the stock broke apart sending the rifle back into his shoulder(the stock broke and then came back at him) and it just destroyed his shoulder. So long story short, the guy ended up in the hospital and they had to amputate his arm cause of the sever amount of damage done from the rifle. Now im not bashing Mossberg, just dont want this to happen to anyone else. Ill get a picture of my buddys gun.

o and btw, My buddy bought this rifle new in August 09, He put 16 shots though it. Thats it.

Personally, I would get a Savage package instead. Or an even better idea, Stevens rifle, mount a decent scope and rings. Personally I've always done Bushnell scopes (recommmend the 3200 line) with Leupold bases/rings with great success.

I have a Savage package rifle in .300 mag which has been great also, especially considering the price.

But in the end, all guns do have their fair share of problems, especially the budget ones. Mossberg ATR = action, Tikka = plastic bolt shroud breakage, Remington 770 = action and well Savages = perfect ;) :D

Just thinking about the wrecks that I've read about would have me developing one heck of a good flinch when shouldering one.
