Cutting the barrel myself....yes, I searched !

Hi

Just looking for a precison about the cutting of the barrel on a shotgun. I have an old H&R 12 gauge single shot, 30 inch barrel. I want to cut it to about 22 inches. I know I will loose the choke, but this gun will be used for rabbit and other small game. Please answer those question as short as you can please. I already read all post regarding the minimum lenght, so please don't repeat it...thanks. Just looking for yes or no.

1. Do I need to put back a front sight on the cut barrel ?

2. Do I have to call RCMP to let the know that I reduced the lenght of the barrel ?

Why would you need to call to tell them you changed it.... I imagine it says 470mm or greater on your registration card. At least thats what it says on any shotgun i own
 
Some kind of a sight is nice to have. If you can buy or borrow a tap for the thread of your bead I would remount it. When I've done it I marked the new location before cutting the barrel so that I could use the original bead to help locate the centerline.

Last I checked, it was illegal to change the barrel length of any firearm unless you are a certified gunsmith. Then, it has to be reverified and re-registered.

I'll pick door number 2 to start..There is no licencing program for gunsmiths in canada,you can hang up your shingle(sign) above the door ,get your self a business licence and have the janitor do firearm repairs for you.:cheers:

Last time you checked, you mis-interpreted the law.

It's not illegal to cut down a barrel as long as it's longer than 18" (or 18.5 on a semi-auto).

I know its so silly too.. I personaly rather just take it to a local gunsmith he does good work and if you call them and ask they will tell you doesnt hurt to call and ask..
 
1. The front sight is useful, but not necessary. There are aftermarket ones that come with a tap, or clip/ glue on.
2. No need to call the CFO/ RCMP. This only applies if you were to change the classification. When/ if you sell the gun they may want to verify the barrel length, which is no problem.

I have a 12 guage SxS barrels cut to 20 inches,it was verified on the phone when i bought it at a gunshow and the transfer was sent to the cfo who ok'ed it 3 hours later.It has a bead at the end of the barrel and a white one halfway down which makes it really nice for shooting slugs accurately.
Make sure any ridge inside the barrel is filed off after cutting or it can split the barrel when fired..:eek:
 
Thanks for the answers. I will not call a gunsmith for this, mainly because I paid 50$ for the gun, it is too long for what I do, and I need a small project....

I will call RCMP just to make sure, and since the front bead is long gone I might try to make one. And yes, I'll clean the barrel before I shoot...

If you require an amendment to your registration certificate, please contact our office at the number below. Please have the unloaded firearm with you and a means to measure the barrel. Please advise the Agent that you are reporting a change in barrel length to your firearm.
You will need to provide your personal information as well as the registration certificate number for the firearm. The Client Service Agent will verify the firearm in the Firearm Reference Table and notify the appropriate department to make the changes to the firearm as long as the changes do not change the class of the firearm. By your doing this, you will meet the requirement to report any changes to the firearm.

should i phone them up and tell them i intend to mount a maglight onto my shotgun?
 
"...paid 50$ for the gun..." Wouldn't have a smithy do it either. Use a pipe cutter then file the muzzle flat and square and deburr. Cut it a bit longer than 18".
A bead isn't required, but it doesn't hurt. Drill and tap the hole about 1/2" in from the finished muzzle.

dont post advice if your not sure yourself.

its the OP's shotgun, so as long as its legal, and he's gonna enjoy it, chop away!

2. No you don't.

Here are the standard conditions of your registration:
---------------------------------------------------------
Standard Conditions

Firearm owners must report to the Registrar of Firearms within 30 days:

-any modification to the firearm that affects its classification (non-restricted, restricted, prohibited);

-any modification that results in the firearm ceasing to be a firearm;

-any change to a frame or receiver that allows it to discharge ammunition;

-any modification to the type, action, calibre or gauge of the firearm; and

-any modification to an altered automatic firearm

----------------------------------------------------------

You can find this info on the page containing your registration certificate received from CFC. The only one that I know requiring a licensed gunsmith is:

-any modification that results in the firearm ceasing to be a firearm;

"deactivation"
