After 12 unsuccessful days of chasing trophy Wt around my farm, I took my son into the big bush country in Western Alberta for a mixed bag hunt. We could have filled all 4 doe and both buck WT tags but I am still holding out for a great one. We ttok this doe and a 4x5 wt that I will add pics later, as well as this 5pt Bull elk. Shot on the Elk was about 450 yards, rifle is a Kimber 84M 270 WSM, son's Deer is a Browning Abolt on 308 win. Stayed old school wall tent style and ded a pile of walking, glassing rattling ect. definitely one of the most gratifying hunts i have had, as it is so much nicer to share with your kids and to get them hunting the "Right way" ie not simply road hunting as 90% of hunters in this area do. not one hunter was sighted more than 400 yards from the road.

Kids doe shot at 100 yards

Bull Elk taken 2 miles from a road. I saw him from 3/4 mile away and was able to close the distance to 450 yards and after several good hits from 140 gr Hornady SPBT, the bull was down. of course I had left the rangefinder in camp that morning, as well as my game saw, both of which would have made life easier.

The recover unit, I could not believe the power the little 17 year old suziki 300 had, tower a 440 lb elk and 2 220 pound hunters uphill 2 miles back to trailhead.

Fantastic hunt Trap!

Can't wait until my boys are older.

Although upon returning from my trip, my 4 yr old asked if he can come when he is bigger. Can't wait.

Why several good hits? Was there an issue with the bullet performance?

I am a big proponent of shooting until the game is down, after a high lung hit at 470 yards, the bull continued to stay up so several followup hits were administered as he was on the edge of an extremely thick regrown pine area.
Bullet performance was fine, and he only travelled 50 yards from the first hit.

I love the 270 WSM, but it is a bit on the small side for shooting elk at this range, but as many say a dead animal = acceptable bullet performance.

I use the hornady SPBT as the barnes TShock showed very poor expansion and long recoveries on several animals i harvested two years ago, this has not been the case with the interlocks.

That hasn't at all been the case in my experiences with the TSX.When driven at proper velocities, they expanded just fine.
