Is an orange traffic vest (you know the type, you see them everywhere these days), an appropriate hunting orange. For deer rifle season in Manitoba, if it makes a difference. Just thinking the cheapest I've seen an authentic "Hunter Orange" garment was at wholesale for $25 for a vest, whereas I can get a traffic vest pretty much anywhere for less than $15 (and save a trip to wholesale, which typically ends up costing $300).

You will look pretty ridiculous with all that shiny #### on the vest but I can't imagine anyone arguing the effectiveness of a construction vest when it comes to visability. All you need now is a sign post with a SLOW, and STOP sign.

I wish I was there with you brother. I have had to forgo the hunting this year. Next year though I am planning something. Take the week off and go nuts for a week. How you enjoy Winnipeg, me and the GF are thinking about Alberta to start our lives after University.

Should be able to get an orange hunting vest at any Canadian tire etc.
In NB you can buy one at every other gas station for about $10.

But you know if you buy a $200 orange hunting jacket you will become a better hunter ;)

check what your reg say here in Ontario you cant use them

Was reading the hunting guide for the last few days, it's pretty vague, just says if I wanted to, I could wear camo orange, if it met the regs.

I didn't waste my $$$ on anything silly like a $200 jacket, but I found this awesome gum, has silver in it, so the deer can't smell my oatmeal and coffee breath, only $10

Remember seeing a vest for about $10 at Cabela's in wpg a couple of months ago.

I'll check those two, I recall seeing an ad for Cabela's, but I'll check CT first.

Only good jobs here are Gov't jobs. We have a lot of downtrodden folk. If public service is your calling, sure MB is for you. If you want to use the entreprenuerial spirit to forge a blazing trail, perhaps Alberta might be a little better.

if you look closely at the vest, some of them have the reflective stripes sewn on- about two seconds with a sharp knife or better yet a seam ripper fixes that-i've seen regs( i don't recall where) where "the hunter must display xx square inches of blaze orange on both front and back as well as a hat"- and that number xx is large enough to preclude a vest alone

If I remember correctly there are stipulation on the exact colour and the lightwaves it reflects....(Ontario)

A hunter orange garment and head cover must be worn. The hunter orange garment must cover a minimum of 400 square inches (2,580 square cm) above the waist and be visible from all sides. Open mesh or camouflage hunter orange must not be part of the 400 square inches. A hunting coat or vest generally meets this requirement. The hunter orange head cover may have: open mesh; a peak or brim colour other than hunter orange; a crest or logo which does not completely cover the hunter orange on the side where it is affixed. The head cover may not contain camouflage material.
Hunter orange colour standards are generally consistent across North America. Manufacturers can provide information regarding clothing compliance with this standard.

The industry standard across North America and currently used by many Ontario outdoors clothing manufacturers is a daylight fluorescent orange colour with:
  • dominant wavelength between 595 and 605 nanometres
  • excitation of not less than 85 percent
  • luminescence factor of not less than 40 percent

WOW! How do we get along in B.C. without hunter orange laws?

dominant wavelength between 595 and 605 nanometres ???
excitation of not less than 85 percent ???
luminescence factor of not less than 40 percent ???

I use a solid (non mesh) construction vest in Ontario when hunting small game. I haven't measured the wavelength or the area it covers, but if a CO wants to get in an argument over a couple square inches or a nanometer here or there I'd be more than willing. It also has 3M reflective tape and two little yellow stripes. MUCH more visible than straight orange, especially in low light.

Orange is only needed for deer moose bear (large animals) or if your hunting small game during these seasons.

I've wondered if the deer, moose or whatever can see the reflective material better than the blaze orange - ie: if it stands out like a sore thumb or whatever. Apparently the blaze orange just shows up as white to them.
Any thoughts
