Hey...

I have a whack of .22's.... I'm leaning towards a 17 hmr for something new to plink with... a change of scenery we might say!

Are the Savage 93's all they are cracked up to be???

I think I know the answer to my question already! Solid... yes??

Cheers,
Ken

I have a 93R17-BTVS

http://www.savagearms.com/93r17BTVS.htm

with a cheap Simmons 6.5x20x50 scope.

Was just out sighting it in last weekend, and I think it will shoot quite well, if I bear down and do my part. My last 3-shot group you could cover with a nickel, and I'm confident I can better that (if it's not windy, and I don't have any coffee, and all the stars align correctly...). Now I need to play with a few different ammos, see what it likes best.

It's a beautiful gun. Action seems a tad rough (sometimes had trouble feeding the first round out of a full mag), but hopefully will smooth out with shooting. No recoil, and a tonne of fun to shoot. So far so good.

My only comment would be that ammo is more expensive. I bought a box of Federal at Canadian Tire for about $15. At the local gun shop, picked up a box of Hornady and Remmington for $20 and $25(!) respectively. All were boxes of 50. I sure hope it likes to shoot Federal....

Cool... thus far! What's a used 93 with wood/ laminate stock going for anyway? Would not know a good deal on these if it slapped me in my face.... I'm liking what I am hearing with the 17! Should have taken the .22 blinder's off some time ago.. haha :)

I have one of these, it's superb :)

I bought mine new from Ellwood Epps for $432.32, + tax and shipping. Service was good, they answered my many annoying emails. :)

Bear in mind that was new, and I wanted the shiny shiny of the thumbhole stock and the stainless barrel. I think I was a magpie in a previous life. :p

I see Ellwood has the 93R17-F for $250.28, if you want a less expensive new one.

So, used ones should go for a bit cheaper than that, I would think/hope/expect. Check the EE, maybe there's some in there.

I've got a .17, they're great shooters out of the box, but get better after a couple hundred rounds down the pipe. They seem to be the most accurate .17, according to all the rimfire forums.

Fit and finish isn't stellar, they benefit from a little time spent smoothing rough edges and polishing.
The trigger can also be taken down to 2 pounds with little creep and a crisp break with a little work. Check out the rimfire central forums for that info.

After break in mine shot 1" groups at 100 yards consistantly.
Bedding knocked that down to .5" and under groups, when the wind is down and I'm shooting well.
I had to bed it four times to get it just right.

Here's mine with a falcon 4-14 ffp on a one piece base.

I've had the basic, Plain Jane model for a few years now.
Nothing fancy except Accutrigger.
Its the most accurate rifle I own and its a dream to shoot.
If only it was a left handed one. :(

Savage makes at least two of their 17 HMRs in left hand models:

Note that the pictures in both those links are for the right hand models, but the info is for the left hand.

Is that a Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5x20x50mm on your Mako, racer111?

I have the same one. What rings are you using?

Sorry, I just grabbed that pic off the net. Mine has a Bausch & Lomb of some sorts on it. Really should get some better glass for it

Had to get some super high rings for it to clear the objective.

How do you like the Simmons?

Simmons seems fine so far. Only been out the the range once with it. But I haven't seen/used a lot of scopes, so I don't have much basis for comparison.
It was cheap, ($109 from MidwayUSA), and seemed like a reasonable choice. Came with a nice scope cover, which doesn't fit on it at the moment because my crappy rings don't give me enough clearance between the barrel and the 50mm end. Anyway, enough #####ing. :) Adjustments seemed nice, very positive clicks. Glass seems clear, but again, not much experience. It would be nice to compare side by side with an expensive scope, see if oh, say, $1000 bucks on optics would be well spent or not.

I have some x-high weaver detachable rings, and I'm not impressed. I think they scratched the scope going on, don't feel that solid, and as I said above, not enough clearance to use the scope cover. I guess that's what you get for $25.

thats the best looking .17 ive seen yet

Thanks

I hate to have to leave that goofy looking sims barrel damper on there, but the darn thing actually helps tighten groupings, though only very marginally so.

Very few gophers have ever managed to escape that particular rifle.
Out to 200 yards on a calm day, missing a gopher is a very rare occurance indeed.

I can tell you fellows also that the falcon scopes are a bargain at the $400-$500 range. I've tried lots of the other brands in the $200-$1000 range (mueller, simmons, bushnell, leupold, etc.) and the falcon is by far the best bang for the buck in quality as well as features.
Frontier firearms carries them.

Just wait for a few months there are some nice changes coming from Savage in the next year it might be worth waiting for the 17hmr. I'm waiting to see what's coming. you will be very surprised
