A friend of mine came across a Winchester model 788 LEFT-HANDED bolt action rifle in .308. It's fitted with a scope, not sure what kind but it looks like the scope isn't anything special.

Just curious if anybody knows what this rifle would be worth new and what it's worth used (in "good to very good" condition). I can't seem to find any info.

He says it was a Winchester. But all I found online were Remingtons... Is there such thing as the Winchester 788, or is he getting it mixed up because it shoots the ".308 Win"?

It looks like he is mixed up, because it uses "308 Winchester cartridges."
788 Remington, came out probably in mid 70s, was the Remington econo line. Never the less, they soon developed a reputation for excellent accuracy.
It is worth what someone will pay for it. Things, including rifles, are often worth more to one person than to another. In this case it is because it is left handed. Certainly, a left handed person would pay more for this than would a right handed person.

they were made from 1967- 1983 they are very accurate rifles with good triggers the actions have been used to build target rifles if you reload for them you have to be aware of max loads they have rear locking lugs and are sensitive to pressure. As far as price as usual condition is everything a clean bare rifle could be in the range of $400-$500.

Rem 788

$400 - $500.

NAA.

A left hand 788 ejects the shells to the right. The only thing that makes it left handed is the bolt handle. The action opening and extracter are on the right side. I have a few of them. My uncle bought them new in the early 70's for $139.00 a piece.

The left hand 788 is kind of an abomination...ejection port and safety lever are on the right side....

I just bought a very nice right hand 788 in 308 with an Elite 3000 3-9X on top for $330 plus GST....a lefty might be worth another $100....keeping in mind a new lefty 700 SPS is not much more than that.

"...made from 1967-1983..." The left handed .308 788's were discontinued in 1980. Crying shame too.
788's have somewhat of a 'cult' following. High end accuracy in an entry level rifle.
Profit River had one listed at $595. Right hand rifles run about $100 less.
