As much as I like your ideas, stating that "The primary use of a firearm is for self defense" is absolutely incorrect and definitely something the anti gun crowd will not be able to wrap their heads around. In fact, if you were to tell the police that your purpose of having a specific firearm IS for self defense, you'd probably have your license taken away as a danger to the public.

The sad fact is that in our country, guns are for sporting use only and the laws reflect that. All that being said, I'm totally on board with firearms being used for self defense and if it came down to it, it's better to be judged by 12 then carried by six.

So, I think the way things are politically, it's a stronger argument to portray the AR as a modern "sporting rifle" then to try and tackle the big fish (our right to self defense with firearms). Two different fights...we have to pick one to focus on.
 
Numbers are everything. Likewise, it is said that the world is run by the people who show up i.e. participate.

The more people use the AR in sport shooting the less likely it will be banned later.

If you have a restricted license and don't own an AR type rifle- buy one.

If you don't have a restricted license - get one. Then buy an AR type rifle right after you buy your first handgun.

I fully agree with this statement. The more the AR becomes common place in sporting events, the more it will loose it's "Assault Rifle" reputation.

Everyone who is able, should at the very least, go out and get an AR lower (even stripped) to boost the numbers. I, for one, will never be with out an AR...no matter what rifles I buy and sell.

Unfortunately that kind of "stand your ground" stuff will never fly in Canada.

The scope of the original poster's article is to lump AR's in to a friendlier category of rifles that the antis don't have as much of a problem with. The antis are always after scary black rifles. Making AR's "friendlier" might not convince the antis, but it might make the AR platform more attainable and attractive to the average shooter, thus bumping numbers and making it that much harder for the antis to restrict or ban. As it stands the AR's image makes it a vulnerable target.

At least by a stripped lower. 200 bucks is cheap insurance against a ban and bumps up the number of ARs.
 
This is a tough problem that will take a long time to fix- Canadians no longer have any concept of personal responsibility- we look to our .gov to feed, clothe and keep us safe. While I'd love to have a castle law and ccw up here (and we may) I doubt I'll live long enough to see it. Doesn't mean I won't keep lobbying for it....
