Hey Guys n Gals....

Pretty new to the firearms bug...been a serious knife collector as long as I can remember....but recently got bit by the gun bug...

Just bought myself a Remington 597 VTR...but still really want to find myself the most AR-like, tactical style rifle in a non-restricted .223 (or other) platform....looking for something that doesn't tie me to a range if I want to shoot...

I already love the Swiss Arms Classic, but it's a bit steeply priced for me right now...

Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated

OK the swiss is the best....But take a look at the Robinson Armament XCR it is a NON-Restricted AR-15 pretty much ...or if you want a military style gun for cheap look at a CZ 858 or M14....

Probably the closest AR like rifle that is non restricted will be the AR180b-2 or the Robarms XCR.

The Armalite is discontinued however, you may still find them at gun stores or on the EE (equipment exchange)

The Robarms XCR is a recently designed rifle, and will be in production for many years, however its also pretty pricey (not as much as the SIG though). I think many are going for about 25-2600 dollars.

to your above post, it was the Robarms M96 Expeditionary rifle that was discontinued. The XCR is still being made, although the supply is a little more limited up here due to State Department restrictions.

Any idea where these can be found?

As RaptoR correctly noticed AR-180B-2 is the right (non-restricted) rifle. And the best source for it I think is EE forums.

Note that the lower receiver is plastic there. Darn strong plastic, but it is not metal. Makes it very light though - pleasure to carry.

Yah, it's about 6lbs. empty, and can take AR15 mags. You can even get AR15 stock adapters for it if you want to put a collapsible stock on it.

I went with the 581 series Mini-14. You can get lots of aftermarket tricks to pimp it out and they are accurate as well as reasonably cheap (roughly $1000). I put a $100 Butler Creek side folder and its all done. There are many on CGN that will "dis" the mini but my experience is good cheap fun "MIL style" reliable .223.

legal to use lar mags in the ar180?

Legally speaking, since the LAR mags were designed for the AR-15 pistol, they can have a 10 round capacity. The fact that the also happen to fit in an AR-15, Ar-180B, XCR, M96, etc. is just a bonus. So yes, you can use them.:)

To the original poster, any of these rifles are fine choices. I love my AR-180B.

My issue with the AR-180 is the taper fit rail held with a spring. I had mine for about 24 hours before I sold it.
What was it doing that was so bad? i just bought one havn't tried it out on the rifle yet:confused:

Are they any different than a regular AR 15 mag? different in apearance? and if so where can one find them and how much?

Also where could a guy find documentation to print off showing that it is legal (to keep in gun case in case of the all-too common event of over zelous cops busting balls over it)

you can use any maag in any gun if they fit, and they aren't prohibited. The law just says the mags designed for semi auto rifles have to be pinned for 5 rounds. The lar mags are designed for a pistol. Another example is the Beretta cx4 storm. It comes with mags pinned to 5 rounds but you can buy 10 round Beretta pistol mags and use em in it.

Yeah your registration certificate! It says Non-restricted! So you can keep the gun hangin on the wall as long as it is trigger locked and unloaded, seperate from ammunition. you don't need to do anything with it to transport just put it in the trunk.
