N.B deer hunters want right to use crossbow

Deer hunting season began Monday in New Brunswick along with a renewed call by some hunters to allow the use of crossbows.

Hunters currently can only use rifles or bows.

But it's getting harder and harder for hunters to bag a deer with a gun because the animals' habits are changing, New Brunswick deer biologist Rod Cumberland said.

Deer are now more likely to congregate in urban areas, he said, where for reasons of public safety, hunters can't use rifles, the weapon of choice.

"If you can't use a rifle in these areas, where there are a lot of human dwellings, you have to improvise a little bit more and use a different weapon so you can get a little tighter to where the deer are at," Cumberland said.

The Department of Natural Resources said it's reviewing whether to allow crossbow hunting in New Brunswick.

"A crossbow was thought to be a poacher's weapon of choice because it was silent and fairly small. Though, nowadays, if someone is going to poach, there are far more effective weapons," said Matt Jones, a department spokesman.

The government would have to amend acts and regulations to allow crossbow hunting, as well as set up education programs, Jones said.

Any change likely won't happen before fall 2011, he said.

New Brunswick has 100,000 white-tailed deer, according to the Natural Resources Department's website.

If you want to help us make crossbow hunting legal, send a short letter to the NB Minister of Natural Resources, Wally Stiles.

I appreciate you efforts!

To the Hon. Wally Stiles;

I am writing today with some concerns that I have over some of the hunting regulations currently in place for the Province of New Brunswick:

- calibre restrictions during non big game season
- lack of year round Sunday hunting
and,
- the fact that crossbows cannot be used for hunting.

I'm a little confused as to why hunters are not allowed to use anything bigger than a .23 calibre during varmint season. I, for one, would really enjoy the opportunity to be able to harvest coyotes at distances only obtainable by using larger calibre firearms. And the restriction of shotgun shells is also confusing to me. Why am I not allowed to carry slugs with me while I am out bird hunting? What if I was to run into a bear who decided that I looked good for dinner? Or more realistically, what if I was to accidentally come between momma bear and her cubs? Just because bear attacks are not common in NB, that does not mean they don't happen and when they do, hunters should have the ability to defend themselves.

As far as I know, Sunday hunting is legal across Canada year round whenever there is a hunting season open. As you well know, hunting is allowed all year round in NB (with a small two week break right before Oct. 1st) but hunting on Sunday is still limited to three weeks. For many hard working New Brunswickers, the only day they have available to enjoy this wonderful part of our heritage is Sunday. Why keep this from them?

As for crossbows, to me they seem to be the perfect mix of a rifle and a bow. Hunting with a rifle is legal, hunting with a bow is legal, why is hunting with a crossbow illegal? I have heard that they are banned for hunting because it would make poaching easier. I certainly hope that this isn't true because that makes no sense whatsoever. First of all, poachers are people who are not following the law; the fact that it is illegal to hunt with a crossbow will not stop them. And even if it did stop them from using a crossbow, why wouldn't they simply use a compound bow instead? Just as quiet and even easier to use.

Please take these concerns under review and do what you can to help improve the hunting regulations in NB.

Sincerely,

mmatt

I got a letter from Wally Stiles today also.
I have no idea how to post it however.
Congrats to the crossbow guys.
Speaking up counts.

Nice work guys.
I have no interest in using a crossbow, doesn't turn my crank, and I love my bow too much, but feel that they should be allowed during bow and rifle seasons. My dad is coming on to 70 in a couple of years, and will not be bowhunting much more. He would love to carry a crossbow during bow season.
Keep on them to make it legal during bow season!!! Unless that is what they have in mind. In alberta the bow associations are fighting against them, for whatever reason.

Admittedly not a done deal but it must be considered a positive step.
As always, more work to be done, but surely a good start?

What is the long bow guys' beef against others partaking in the bow hunt?

It seems to be a cross between elitism and not wanting to share their tags.

The bow associations stance is that it is NOT bow hunting, and the woods would soon be overrun with crossbow hunters. This has been debunked in a large study in Ohio, where harvest rates and hunter numbers have stayed quite consistent with the addition of crossbow hunters to bow seasons.
I think it reflects poorly on the bow associations.
