I have a chance to buy a new 700P for ~$900. I was wondering whats everybodies thoughts on it, accuracy wise? quality wise? Is the factory barrel the way to go? Or should I take off the factory barrel and re barrel it in something else? I wanted to stay with a .308 though. Any ideas on this one? I wouldnt have a chance to shoot it before purchase...it would be a pay the money take home the box sort of thing. Thanks for any info.

$900 for a 700P is about right. If you are just going to re-barrel it I would look for a deal on an SPS and get a barrel and whatever stock you like. But if you like the HS Precision stock which quality is pretty good, than get the 700P and shoot it with the factory barrel. If it shoots good don't worry about re-barreling it, it may shoot really well. But if you want to shoot consistent 1/4 inch groups, yeah a match barrel is the only way to go.

I'm under the impression you're a relatively new shooter, correct? Buy it and shoot the Hell out of it. Until you can say that your shooting skill has got to the point where your equippment is a limiting factor, don't waste the money on replacing the barrel. Spend the extra money on quality glass or ammo to shoot it with.

bingo. Shoot, then shoot more, then when you talk yourself into it, gucci your gear. Many 700Ps will well outshoot their owners. If you feel your factory barrel is limiting you, try more diverse positions.

In less then 10 posts, the regulars will be along to say "it will shoot like any factory barrel. you should rebarrel". lol

I would tend to agree with most of the above... for $900 NIB it is a good deal. The HS stock is definitely better than the sps varmint's stock, and you would have a tough time upgrading an sps varmint to a good stock for the ~$200 difference.

If you don't have a lot of precision rifle experience, the factory barrel will likely outshoot you for many many rounds. Take the money you'd spend on a new barrel right away and spend it on ammo, you'll be much better off in the long run.

$900 NIB is a good deal.

Put some good bases/rings and glass on it then give some 168 Federal match ammo a try. Your chances are very good of getting a shooter.

That should be a fun rig.

If you're just starting off, keep it as is. What I would do in your situation is to instead invest your money in an Über-optic (note that I used "Über", that should be a hint ;)) that will last you a lifetime (or several decades, whatever). This will be of use to you no matter what your level of shooting, and is transferrable between rifles, from your humble 700P to some tricked out custom tactical rig you buy in the future.

no ive been shooting for decades, but time doesnt equate with skill :D

Long range rifle shooting isnt something ive done very much of.

I have a few rifles, my main target gun is a 6mm- but I dont reload yet- so I hardly ever shoot it.

Yeah for the optic I would budget about 2-2.5 times the value of the gun. Was thinking Nightforce or similar.

So the factory barrel seems to be good enough for my barn blasting endeavours then huh?

Any quality issues with these guns? Or are the LE series better than the commercial stuff coming from Remington now?

There are many factors involved in shooting consistent 1/4 inch groups, the rifle only being one of them. If a rifle is capable of such accuracy, most shooters are not cabable of such consistency. Of crse, everybody on the internet shoots 1/4 inch groups.

I'm just saying, most factory barrel are doing good to do 1 MOA consistently. Sometimes you can get lucky a few times and shoot 1/2 MOA. In my statement I am assuming that the shooter is experienced and other gear is up to par as well. You can not deny that the most important factor to a "Precision" rifle is the barrel.

This is the Precision Rifle forum still.

Great deal on a Rem700.

Have a 700P that has been heavily customized, all except the barrel. With the right loads it is consistantly less than .50MOA at all ranges I have tried.

With the groups I am getting with a factory tube, there was no point in changing out barrels, I couldn't probably improve the accuracy as with a new one.

Great guns.

If you can consistently shoot 1 MOA in field conditions, I recommend that you sign up with your local P.R.A. and shoot precision rifle matches. You would do very well for yourself.
