16 (c) of the application says:

During the past five (5) years, have you threatened or attempted suicide, or have you suffered from or been diagnosed or
treated by a medical practitioner for: depression; alcohol, drug or substance abuse; behavioural problems; or emotional
problems?

A very close friend of mine has had a long history of depression, severe anxiety, and even psychosis. If my friend were to say "no" on the application, would my friend be in the clear? I doubt the RCMP will go through all the trouble of subpeonaing all of one's health records.

Please don't turn this thread into an ethical/moral debate.

Thanks in advance.

With a history like that, you don't think it's an ethical or moral issue? WTF is wrong with you?

UNbelievable.

Literally.

Just leave.

It is an interesting question that is posed and it might reinforce why liscencing (not registration) may be required.
Do we want gun owners who have those problems - no.
Do we think that most aplicants will answer the question truthfully if they do have these problems - no.
Wife recently applied for a Security Liscence which entails a course, a written test, fingerprints and background check. The application asked similiar questions and she answered truthfully that she had suffered from panic disorder. All that was asked was that she provide a letter from her Doctor stating that it was under control thru medication and that it did not affect her ability to carry out her job.
Liscence was granted. She's planning on doing her PAL and CORE in the future and I assume the same criteria will be applied.

I have a friend I used to hang around alot before our interests went in different directions. He is a hunter and suffers from depression. He would take a bottle of pills before looking at a gun. I believe he would rather have someone find him overdosed than have blood splatered all over the room. Just because they are depressed does not mean they do not think about other people.

I see C-391 is bring the anti's out in droves to destroy our sport.

If you are an anti, please don't bother posting such ridiculous questions. At least put some thought and effort into your baiting (ie. have more than one post).

If you're serious, you need help as much as your "friend".

The application is not a joke. It is investigated. Many applicants are rejected. If you think it's just a formality I invite you to try.

Don't bother responding. That's all I'm going to say to you.

your retarded.

Depression is very serious. And anyone dealing with severe depression should not be allowed to have firearms.
I just lost my uncle friday morning to suicide. He had been suffering from severe depression for a few years now. He was just released from the hospital a few weeks ago. I don't know how he took his life, I hope it was not with a firearm. I will know more in a few days. Lord, how I hope it was not with a firearm.

To the OP. Wake up. If your "friend" says "no" on his application, and gets a firearm, then proceeds to commit suicide with it. Do you think your conscience will be clear? What if he kills someone else in a psychotic episode? It's unbelievable that you have the balls to even ask this question here.

Fully in agreement with the comment to the OP, here.

As to the rest- damn. Just damn. So very sorry RJD. Deepest sympathies to you and yours.

Yeah, Nice first post for the OP. For sure a shill for the anti's. The f*cktard should be banned, but I would like to see their response first. Somehow I don't think we will see one.

If it was your son, or daughter with these problems would you be giving them access to your guns? Use your head the question is on the application for a reason. If you lie on the application you are putting yourself in even more trouble. Have fun with that. I however would not want a freinds blood on my hands. Tell him you will take him to shoot, if he gets the urge, but he should not be allowed to own guns.

Would your friend be lying if he checked "no" on the application????? Should I get my 8 year old daughter on here to explain to your the difference between right and wrong??? Sheesh........

I think we should trace your IP, find out who you are, compile a list of your associates and forward this thread to the CFC in the event that one of your "friends" ends up applying for their PAL.

Paul

Answer questions truthfully and give the extra information when requested and let the chips fall where they may. I asked during my telephone interview about that question when they asked me it, I wondered what exactly they would do if someone answered yes to the question. She told me they would request extra information from the treating physician to make sure that the person has no history of suicidal behavior or violent tendencies and review it from there. Every case is different. Lying is just plain dumb.
