I intend to spend next summer in the Yukon prospecting....looking to upgrade my current Mauser 45/70 (405ga) to a round with more punch.

Have located a 9.3x62, but have been looking at the ammo(45/70) produced by "Garrett Cartridgers" in Chehalis, WA.

Any info on whether there is a Canadian outlet? Anybody tried their product?

Lol! I was just reading about the 9.3x62...it is on my short list of cartridges I've admired but never owned. Do you handload? Consider the Crater or Crater 2 by Jae-Bok Young.

I don't think you can get Randy's ammo unless you go pick it up, even then you'd have to check the laws pertaining to such.

However, If you handload there are tons of bullets that would make your 45/70 potent for anything that walks. Personally I've had good sucsess with 350gr Hornady (rn and fn) on deer, moose and bears. Most recently I tried a 420gr wide nose hardcast (Jae Bok Young) (1750fps) which dropped a bear in its tracks. Hardcast works.

Heres a good article on some .458 bullets

And heres some choices in .458 with reviews. Lots of choices espeaclly if you have a Siamees Mauser.

Handload and you'll have enough "Punch" for anything that walks.

Good luck.

Hornady just introduced their commercial 9.3X62 ammo.
But the price of ammunition may get you into reloading.
I have several rifles in 9.3X62 and it's my main hunting caliber.
It's a very easy to load cartridge and will do anything you could think of (O.K., forget the elephants). The components are readily availlable Canada-wide, and there is a lot of choice.
Even on smaller critters (wolf size), it punches holes without destroying the beast.
I love both calibers but the 9.3's really got the edge for me.

Epps are good at suppplying specialty ammo.

WOW, I have now heard it all!!!!!
Wanting a more powerful rifle than a bolt action 45-70, for protection in the Yukon!!
Ted, you've been holding ut on us. You didn't tell us you had such beasts up there.
I once walked west from the road near Carmacks, on a prospecting venture. After a mile or so, I had seen so many grizzly tracks that I returned to my vehicle and got my rifle. But shucks, it was only my old faithful 30-06, so I guess it wouldn't have been any good against them armoured crtitters!

45/70vs9.3x62

45/70 with good bullets is plenty alright!
Although there have been big fierce furry creatures west of Carmacks that met their demise by being beat to death by a good piece of wood off of a well stocked 30/06 mauser:evil:
LOL ....Sorry I couldn't resist
Colin

45/70

consider the rifle / action as well as the caliber. I'm a huge fan of bolt guns, but my 45/70 GG WITH 18" mag port is unbeatable in the bush. if you have the oppertunity go to "utube" and type fast shooting 45/70 . there's a guy practising bear defense . rifle on shoulder ,chamber empty , to round fired in about 1 second. with follow up shots coming as fast as only a lever can give.

That guy if I'm thinking of the same video, is our very own Camp Cook, a BC Prospector. :)

Lots of good info.............I believe that I will be staying with my 45/70, yes...it is a converted Siamees Mauser with 22"bbl.

Have dispatched griz with everything from 30-30 to 7mm Mag, even use an old 455/577 single shot, but when ones has a choice..........commen sence says to use the biggest stick available.

Have to concur with H4831's take on the level of power offered by a bolt action in 45-70. Power wise, it isn't too far off that of the 458WM. For prospecting and the possible need for protection, the range is likely going to be close and things are going to happen quickly. Having lived in the B.C. interior in a gold mining/prospecting area, my choice would be my Marlin 1895GS, in 45-70 and likely with 400gr Speer or 405gr Remington handloads.

I would think if you want a rifle for protection the .45/70 is the way to go, up close and personal it should really ruin a bears day. The 9.3x62 is kind of the equivalent of the .35 Whelen. It has longer legs than the .45/70 but not the wallop up close where you might need it.

I was under the impression that it (9.3x62mm) would be good for anything that walks North America. And the fact it can be used in Africa seems to give it a bit more credit than you do. The 9.3 came first, so the Whelan would be "kind of" the equivalent to it, no??

Yes, the 35 Whelen is a "spin off" of the X62 (wich came one year BEFORE the 30-06... but just after 30-03...).
The main advantage of the 9.3X62 is it's longer reach and a bit less recoil than the 45-70 Gvt at full potential. I agree that the 45-70 Gvt is a hard hitter on close to very close encounters.

Actually the 9.3X62 is more like the 375 H&H than a 35Whelen....and the 375 H&H has plenty of power to shut down a bear.
The 9.3 is very popular in Africa and by all accounts it works extremely well....Indistinguishable from a 375H&H is what I understand.

For spitting distances a 45/70 with the perfect load might be a better choice. Problem with the 45/70 is that it is very easy to choose poorly.
FWIW (in my opinion) the best choice for spitting distance bear fights is a 416.

Hey, the .35 Whelen is a solid performer, especially with the new RL17 powder (I wonder if it will work as well in the 9.3x62). Some CGNers are getting ~2700 fps with 250gr bullets. Not bad at all, imo.

The 35Whelan is a great round and like you say RL-17 should wake it up some. Not sure I'd put it in the same class as the 375 H&H though.

Considering it's ballistics the 9.3 shouldn't be as good as it supposedly is, but there are a lot of guys in Africa that swear it is so.....I'd like to try it some day.

BTW Its been a while since I reloaded the Whelan, but it seems to me that 2450-2500fps was Max? 2800 out of a 250gr is hot 338 Win velocities.
