Heys guys,

I need help with an SVT-40. I plan on getting one tomorrow morning from Trade ex. I guess all of there rifles are electropenciled, have arsenal repairs (which i'm ok with i guess) and have the rails for the scope (normal????).

what should I be looking for in my purchase. are electropenciled SVT's normal? what year would be the best?

I have never purchased a gun without having it in my hands first... so i'm a little nervous. Also I have not had the time to research this type of gun either  Any comment/suggestions would be appreciated!

You can't really go wrong with any of the SVT-40's. All the current one's coming into Canada have been arsenal refinished, which means they will have electro-pencil. Korov arsenal is one of the rarer versions. Ask Anthony if any have the naval stock, which is more rare also. The naval stock has a brass insert in the butt-stock for the sling attachment instead of a screw-in buckle.
Most of the SVT-40's have the scope mount grooves machined into the receiver, however to properly secure the scope mount, you need a notch machined across the rear of the receiver. Ask Anthony to look for this notch. It is rare to find, but you might get lucky.

Excellent, thanks for that. what does he mean by they have the rail? is this a reference to the groove? or is the rail a seperate piece already attached? (meaning that notch would already be cut out?

oh yeah! the grooves that run lengthwise near the stock. ok. so those are the rails.
so my main concerns are

1. naval stock
2. Korov
3. notch cut out
anything else?

what the hell would a guy do without a resource like this!

Can't pass up that price @ Tradeex =) I've dealt with Anthony on a couple things in the last year -great service and always a solid product.

If I'm remembering right, no scope grooves after mid '42?

Also, P&S Militaria has both Naval stocked (Tula) and Kovrov mfg.d rifles. (They're almost always priced higher than standard stocked rifles). 500 beans. P&S also sells a nice scope mount that takes Weaver rings. OEM or repro mounts/scopes are fairly pricey.

Now if only you could find a nice crate of shells to go with it... =/

exactly! i'm not even all that concerned about the naval stock for that price! and i guess all of them have the "rails" so that mean most likely pre 42'?

You're very unlikely to find a rifle on the rack with a notch...I've had two, now gone, but had to look for them...(and $)

Yes, mostly pre 1942 have the rails. I used to own one, I warn you the gas system is a pain to clean expecially if you shoot surplus.

roger, thanks for the heads up! I kinda assumed that semi-auto was going to come with a whole new set of problems. i'm new to all of this. live and learn i guess

Buck, don't listen to all this nonsense about the SVT-40 being a difficult rifle to clean or shoot. I have 2 & have probably put 1000 rounds through them. The first time you take it apart may be a little tricky, but you will get used to it very quickly. Just be careful of the action spring; it is under a lot of pressure & can spring out & hurt you. Get an SVT-40 gas adjustment tool. You will need it to adjust the gas ejection system. The adjustment is a 5 sided nut that you will bugger up if you try to use pliers to turn it. Check with Anthony if he has any, otherwise I believe P&S Militaria has them. I never shoot anything but my own handloads through my SVT-40's & have never had issues with ammo. One thing I did find was that I had to carefully stack the rounds in the magazine. The 7.62x54r round has a rimmed case, & the rims will catch on each other if you don't stack them in properly. If & when you start reloading for the SVT-40, carefully check each fired cartridge for case head separation. I use a bent paperclip, bend a hook on the end, & slide it down the inside of each case. If the case has started to separate, you will feel the crack from the inside before you start to notice it on the outside.

This is what the SVT-40 gas tool looks like.

Disassemble is extremely easy with this rifle. Here's a good video to get you going. Once you see it, try it and you'll never have a problem. The gas system is easy to access and clean. Use G96 on it beforehand. It'll protect it.

I already have a few SVT-40 rifles, just ordered a few more from Tradex. Those prices were just too good to pass up. Beautiful rifles. Now I just need some ammo, the wrench tool and the new scope mount.

Yup Pre 1942 have the scope grove.

Three arsenals: You'll find one of these symbols by the date.

I picked up an SVT40 from Epps last spring for $269 that was apparently from Tradeex.

It was a nice rifle, refurbed with dark bores but strong rifling. One thing of note however is that mine did not have the rails on the side of the receiver. If that matters to you, I suggest asking Anthony first to ensure whether or not the specimen that you're getting has it.

I also picked up another SVT a few months earlier from Tradeex when they had them for the $429 price, which had a few differences. The earlier purchase was in similar shape, though the bore looked better, it had an earlier style flash hider and the rails in the receiver.

You'll want to give your rifle a really good cleaning when you get it, since there's likely lots of cosmoline in the chamber, the chamber flutes and bore, which can cause the action to stick when shooting laquered ammo. When I took my less expensive SVT to the range last summer, I apparently hadn't cleaned it out enough and could not get the rounds to extract without tapping on the bolt handle. Hopefully I'll get it out again now that I've really cleaned her out. Eventually, I'll probably want to reload for the SVT and my Mosins, but one thing at a time!

The people at Tradeex are great at answering any questions about what they're selling, so ask away. Because they're not being imported there at the present time, your purchase will cost about one third to one half of what Americans are paying for the same rifle.

So I ordered it today!!! :) I told him (I assume Anthony) over the phone that i was interested in a naval stock. he told me he didn't have the man power to hand select a rifle for me. which was kinda dissapointing. so i'll be getting whatever he picked off the rack for me.

Whats the point of the scope groove if some of them don't have the notch cut out ???

The problem is that many people here on CGN are gone buy one of those SVT-40. Handpicking is difficult (for free?) if many people ask for it. Many companies in the US allow handpicking but for a fee of around $50.

I'm not mad about it. i guess i was just suprised I had no say in it. i am very new to this!they are advertised as good to VG. i'll be happy with whatever I get as long as it is as advertised.

I bought a refurb from the last batch, it has a small stock repair, still much nicer than most stuff available. You will be happy.
