Going to Hunt with a Silent Load... :)

I'll add my 2 cents here, as I think this is a fun project. I've loaded 405g bullets in my 45/70 with 12g of trailboss and 300g jacketed with 14g. The 300's go about 1200fps and the 405's are right around 950fps. I wouldn't want to get hit with either one. The 300's group 1.5" at 100y!!
Now this is out of a GG with the ported barrel, so she ain't quiet at the best of times....but it's no louder then a .22RF. So if you where to try a 500g bullet, you could get about what?...800fps maybe. Reduce the charge a little and your at 600fps. Now I'm talking out of my a$$ here, I haven't tried going that low, but sure seems feasible. Add in a long barrel and I'll bet that would be much more quiet then my ported short barrel. Might not be 300fps there CC, but I'm betting 600fps is easily doable.

Along the same lines.....If one were to get a 32" barrel, bore out 18" or so would that be considered a silencer? That way you'd have 18 1/5" rifled and the remainder unrifled, should allow for a little more "silenced" velocity and less problems with bullets sticking. Technically it's not a silencer, just a long barrel so it should be legal. I'm thinking a NEF Buffalo Classic would work well.

Also, would it help to machine/remove the middle driving bands on such a long bullet to reduce the overall friction and help prevent bullets from sticking?

I'm intrigued! Go for it CC!

.41 rimfire gets .425 FPS with a 130gr bullet from, a 3" barrel generating 50+ FPE.
That's only 130grs and I bet you diaper wearers wouldn't take a shot in the azz with one.

Bump the bullet weight up to 450gr ??? That will knock the stuffing from your Depends...

Didn't Mythbusters use an air cannon to shoot a 2lb(?) steel ball at <500fps, through THREE hog carcasses?

aren't there muzzle brake designs that can be used with long barrels to make the load quieter? perhaps a cheap single shot 12 guage with subsonic slugs would work well for this.

I was looking at some pellet guns today. Killing time in the store. Anyways, no pal needed because the velocity is below 500fps and according to the government anything below that speed is not considered a firearm... at least not a deadly one. It makes me wonder about the legalities of a sub 500fps projectile for hunting. Technically you might be hunting with a toy.

A car is not classified to be a car or a go-kart based on its speed. For this reason your comparison of a car to a projectiles velocity is flawed. According to the laws of the land, a projectile isn't considered to be dangerous until it reaches a velocity of 500fps. To my knowledge this classification has nothing to do with weight or energy, or size, just the velocity itself. This makes me wonder if it would even be legal to hunt with such a low velocity round, regardless of wether or not it could be effective.

How would anyone know what the velocity was even if I was asked I could just say that I am good at judging trajectories and shot it from 1200 yards... :D

Well put. I just seem to have a history of being called out by the authorities on the dumbest things. No body has ever been asked, but if I do it, sure as s#@t they will check. For example: I got my lesson about the 500fps law by a friendly, yet unbending, Canadian border guard. The full details of that story maybe better for another day... Best of luck on your quest!

A PELLET isn't considered dangerous. A pellet weighs 8-10grs. The rules are laid out for pellet guns shooting pellets. A pellet gun might become a firearm, a firearm will never become a toy no matter what you shoot out of it.

I don't think this is a bad idea NECESSARILY, but I can suggest two things for this kind of hunt.

Trial Boss.

Bow.

I've already shot 8 deer with a bow/arrow...

I've also shot close to 100 more using standard velocity and mag cartridges here are some of the ones I've shot deer with 22-250/243/6mm-284/6.5TCU/270 Weatherby/280 Rem/30-30/308 Bellm/308 Win/30-06/308 Norma Mag/300 Win Mag/300RUM/375H&H/45-70 and I'm sure I missed a few in there somewhere...

This season the challenge was to only use my 375JDJ & 375RUM for hunting next year it's going to be a big/heavy/super slow/silent 450gr - 550gr bullet.

So basically I've been there and done that and I'm now looking for a new challenge... :D

Do you think a powder like Trail Boss would be easier or better for that type of load?

TB is a bit slower burning powder than the Tite-Group powder I used but it is bulkier.

Here is a link to a burn rate chart that includes TB http://www.imrpowder.com/burn-rate.html Tite-Group that I used is at 10 and TB is listed @ 14.

From what I have read this powder is not sensitive to its position in the case but that is in handgun cases.

I think it will work but the idea is to use the fastest burning powder so that it is completely used up before the bullet exits.
