CZ858/VZ58 Jams and failures

One thing that has really impressed me with these rifles is that I can't seem to jam them.

I have managed to induce double feeds and stovepipes but only through ridiculously contrived methods, because there is just nothing to hold in empties or spare rounds - that whole bolt carrier just slings everything out of that gigantic opening. There is no "tip the rifle to dump out whatever", no "finger#### the rifle to extract double feeds", nothing.

Aside from the gremlin, has anyone ever actually goat-####ed their gun while shooting? What action did it require to get it back in the game?
 
I, like you have not been able to. I have tried shooting upside down, on its side, etc. No jams. I have tried dunking in snow, mud and water - still no jams. Never had the gremlin either. Very good design.
 
I've had no problems with mine except shooting UMC ammo, last round out of all four mags, jammed and had one hell of a good indent in the case. Flawless with surplus.
 
you want FTFeed then use commercial ammo.

but easy polishing of the shoulders and ramp solved that.
 
In nearly 60K rnds I had 2 stovepipes the day I did the ice/mud/water torture test video I put on Youtube, not during the torture test but about 800rnds later that day doing a multi-mag dump. .

I also experienced a dozen or so stoppages while I was tuning the deflector angle on my Beryl rail. They weren't deflecting properly and were getting caught on the return trip by the carrier.

I think however that since my rifle has been around a bit it's real loose and polished and less prone to stoppages. I would also say that my particular rifle is not a good reference sample of the entire VZ population.

But in all that shooting I have never had a stoppage that wasn't caused by purposeful errant modifications or extreme abuse.
 
The only thing I've ever seen, other than a misfeed from a tilted round, that stopped a VZ was a stuck case that required a rod to drive it out.

Same here. Didn't clean or oil the champer enought.
And some times the ejected case bounce on the wall and stop the carrier.

Since I clean it well.... nothing's wrong.

I've done that too. Was due to a sticky residue that a cleaner left that I didn't scrub out. Chucked that stuff since.
 
The only stoppage I ever had was when an ejecting case shot STRAIT up... and on the round after next fell back into the breach and didnt allow it to close! It went up about 4 feet before coming back down...

Wish I had gotten that on camera!
 
I had the gremlin on mine but I got rid of it with a tabbed carrier. Since then, this rifle has performed flawlessly through hundreds of rounds. I've come to think of it as my other Glock.

For months I thought I wasn't cleaning it right, but 6 rounds after having the chamber polished up by a gunsmith it had another FTE. The gunsmith said "The chamber wasn't cut right" and has a slight ridge.

It seems I have the only lemon vz-58/858 in existence :(

I may send my rifle to another gunsmith for a second opinion.
 
First time i took mine out to the range after about 10 shots the whole gun seized up, couldn't open the bolt, disasemble it or pull the trigger. Turns out the little piece if sheet metal inside that retains the safty pin was not in the proper place and the safety backed out, has run flawlessly so far since then with evrything i've tried except S&B softpoints.

I would but I bought it used on the EE. The problem is also very random.

It can be anywhere from 5 shots to 100 for a case to actually get wedged badly enough to FTE. I bought the rifle in the middle of winter, started shooting it late in the spring, and initially believed the FTE was due to dirtiness. The symptoms are almost identical to those of a dirty chamber. I ended up putting the vz-58 on the backburner as I focused more on handgun shooting this year.

Long story short, too much time had passed before I had the issue diagnosed.

I truly love the rifle though. I see this as a minor setback and am hoping I can solve the problem simply by throwing money at it. :D
 
I'm not sure if this was the gremlin you all speak of, but my first 858 caught empty casings. I fired the thing 80-100 times and had a few jams. The front sight post was cranked all the way to the left but it still wasn't 100% zero at 25 yards. There were also many minor scuffs, scratches, etc so I sent it back. Thanks to unbelievable service at Wolverine, it got sorted out. I'm now anxious to try my luck again with an 858 but with hunting season still on in my management unit, I'm out every weekend trying to fill my last deer tag with an SKS.
