Hey all,
Just ordered my SVT40 from Tradexcanada for $340 shipped. I haven't seen too many of these rifles in Canada, and especially at that price! Frontier has them for about $350, including shipping. Act now before they are just a memory.......

So.
For us Red Rifle Newbies..... SKS and SVT 40??? either one better? what is different?

SVT-40 is much longer and looks nicer as it has those nice holes :D.

It is using different ammo which is hard/harder/very hard to get 7.62 x 54R. SKS are so many around and you will never have a problem finding parts etc. SKS are using the all over the place available surplus ammo 7.62 x 39.

SVT-40 7.62x54R (rimmed)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SVT-40

SKS Simonov-45 7.62x39

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SKS

SVT should have an slight edge in long range in terms of power due the the 54R cartridge is more powerful than the x39 rds

Don't own a SVT but it should be little more accurate than the SKS.

SVT only made by Russian but SKS has many variant manufactured in many Countries.

I was told when you shop for SVT pay attention to the stock near the tang area due to many of them has crack or repair many be due to the rifle's design.

Those are great prices for SVT-40. The SVT is quite a bit larger than an sks. It's also quite a bit more powerful. They are interesting guns.

Thanks for the simple answer. :)

That is why lots of people went crazy for the 54R that came in a couple months ago.

So now that it is gone..... No ammo for the rifle :(

X2 plus hunting ammo for 54R is worth gold so if you preparing to use your surplus rifle for hunting the 54R is not cheap.:p

Depends what you consider cheap. Expect to pay about $1 a round for soft-point hunting ammo. It's NOT common so you will have to look around for it. Privi and S&B are the brands I usually see. Reloading for 7.52x54 is the best solution. Brass can sometimes be hard but NOT impossible to find. Tradex has some at the moment.

I found a small supply of Czech Silvertip 54r in New Westminster BC-he's the only local guy that I've seen have these rounds in stock. (Westley Surplus)

The market is flooded with SKS's right now-SVTs are relatively rare. I believe only 1.6 million were produced, compared to God knows how many SKS and their variants. Even if ammo is hard to find (I secured a case of Czech light ball:D), it is still worth it to get one of these rifles, I think they have a fascinating WW2 history, and they will only increase in value. In the USA, expect to pay $600-1000 for an SVT 40....

Got mine from Tradex on friday, and very happy with it for the cheap price. it came with brand new sling, oiler, ammo pouches etc. If I was smart I would buy a couple more. Tradex is awesome to deal with and will be dealing with them again.

I would buy the SVT 40 any day over the SKS. Thre are millions of SKs's around, and yeah, cheap to shoot, but too common and junk if you ask me.

Nice price on those.

Almost makes me want to get another. Mine seriosly flutes the brass...

Glang1 should sell me his and buy a new one ;)

thats alot cheaper then mine was, a bit more then a year ago mine shiped to me was 550$ through trade ex, as for reloading it can be a bugger the chamber is fluted and scars up the brass, ....and as for ammo I never have a problem locating 7.62x54r pretty common where im from and dosnt cost any more then a box of winchester .303 ..7.62x39 ammos a pain to find here though..cheap when you do find it.

I'm not really a milsurp guy. I like the machine guns, STG44 etc but generally not the rifles. The Garand etc are over rated in my books and never had my interest. So I wasn't really interested in the rifles. Then I came across the SVT-40. A very neat rifle. Plus a unique history.

The action on these rifles are fairly slick, and smoother than my CZ-858. It's very advanced for the time, and looks like something that was developed much later.

At $300 these rifles are one heck of a deal. I think I have a problem. My SVT-40 rifle count just climbed even higher. I couldn't pass them up at that price :D

Anyone know where to get surplus ammo for these? Anyone planning on bringing some in?

About 6 million SVT 40 were produced along with 1.5 million SVT 38

You said it!

Even the Privi 7.62 Russian is over $20/box. I'm just glad I was able to make it to the Montreal gun show and pick up some of the $10 Czech ammo.
