Bolt Basics

Technically speaking, the Full Auto bolt carrier has the full metal in the back, which gives it extra weight and prevents it from slamming back so fast (same force, but less weight)

The only big difference is the extended back portion that is machined out on the semi bolt carrier. If you're using it with a semi lower, it makes no difference anyways, since there is no sear.

Here is a good pic that shows the difference in physical dimensions of them:

Got it from ARFcom I think.

You can do the same thing with a heavier buffer, but if you're using a shorty carbine with an opened up gas port, it helps to have all the weight possible to not have it slam back so hard.

Technically speaking it really doesn't make a difference - millions of Colt and commercial rifles, including LE line, use SA and half circle cuts.

You use FA because you need run a M16, or you are obsessed with making sure you have all the mil-spec parts. Real benefits - almost zero. If your rifle needs a FA to run - your gas port is probably off to start with. You are in the trouble land already.......It is like people who need to use a 2H buffer to make sure the rifle works.

However, I would rather buy a high quality SA than a s**tty FA. It is not just the weight - but also the interior.

semi carriers use the firing pin to #### the hammer as the carrier is cut to expose the pin. The M16 carriers shroud the pin and use the carrier to #### the hammer( the middle picture above shows the difference). People think that using semi carriers is very hard on the firing pin. But IMO I'm with GT and would rather use a quality semi than crappy Full carrier. My LE 6920 has the semi carrier and have had no issues at all with it.

Used to be the case. Not true anymore. Most SA carriers have the shrouded pin like the FA. Only difference now is the bit of metal at the back.
