Looking for a new air rifle, need a recommendation!

Hey there. I am looking at purchasing an air rifle. As I do not have my PAL yet I will need to find something under 500 fps. I will be using the air rifle only for target shooting. I want something accurate and reliable. I'm looking for an air rifle that will last awhile and I can teach my kids to use as they get older.

I would prefer one that uses CO2 instead of requiring to be pumped after each shot. Do these exist? I always found it annoying when I was a kid with my air rifle when I had to pump it each shot and then the shots would vary due to the amount of air being used to propel the bb. I would also like one that holds multiple rounds, say 10+.

Does this air rifle exist, and if so, who makes it?

CO2 cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$and isn't worth a darn in cold weather.A springer will last forever.Try home hardware for a CZ 630 or 631 Harold
 
A qb 78 will probably do the job, but co2 actually can vary more than any manual method. The temp of the co2 drops with each shot meaning that the vapor pressure of the co2 also drops. In cold weather, the co2 temperature will only recover to atmospheric temp and this will take a long time, you'll get very poor performance out of it.

Look at a daisy 953, it's a single stroke pneumatic that's almost good enough to compete with, and it's not that expensive either.

I assume a 'single stroke' means you only have to pump once between shots? That would mean the pressure would be the same for every shot, no? That works for me if so.

Are most of the air rifles sold today single strokes?

Yes, instead of having a seperate chamber where the pump stores air, the pump becomes the chamber. Even multipump guns can be very accurate as long as you pump the same number of times and if it's built properly.

No you can still get multi pump.

Modern power plants:
-single stroke pneumatic
-multi pump pneumatic
-single spring piston
-double opposing spring piston (whiscombe airguns)
-co2 12gram cartridge
-co2 bulkfill
-high pressure air bulkfill (hpa)
-precharged pneumatic

Outdated/dangerous power plants:
-ether burning (burned ether from medical ampoules)
-primer fired (used firearm primers)
-co2 8gram cartridge (also used for soda machines)
-daisy spring piston caseless powderburner
 
I'd suggest the QB78 also if you want a Co2, The 22cal costs about $110...which is cheap, they are very accurate and Co2 doesn't cost all that much ,I buy them in boxes of 40 at walmart or CTC. I've bought both 22 and .177 .I like the .177 better because you can get Match pellets . I prefer the H&N Finale Match. The QB uses 2 cartridges but you can use only if you want = 1 full and 1 empty. I get between 50 and 60 constant shots indoors with mine before the power drops. Co2 is not like compressed air ,there is someting like 800-900psi in a 12g cart which is constant until the volume drops. They are nice small rifle..like a small bolt action 22RF. All metal and wood ,no plastic except the barrel band, which you change for a metal one ,if you so desire. The trigger is ajustable also . I got mine from a guy in Mississauga Ont.

caliber, use , weight , etc,? or just visit d&l airguns....their is a walther in 25 caliber, rated @495 or so. This would make big holes, and offer up great power to 25 meters....pellets a bit more, and have to order by mail, not a big deal, as most local pellets are crap now.

So, after reviewing all of what people have said and looking around, is there an air rifle that has all of the following options?:

Single-pump or CO2 fed
Holds Multiple Rounds
Good for target shooting

The QB78 looks nice, but I will be doing all of my target shooting in 'the back yard' (woods) so in the winter I will get very poor performance from the CO2? I wouldn't mind a single-pump if they are more reliable..

edit: the QB78 is available in .22 and .177.. which would be better for what I want?

The qb 78 is a single shot bolt action type. If you are just going to be target shooting then stick to .177. The pellets are cheaper and easier to come by.


There once was a gun long ago which had all of the things you are looking for. It could either be pumped up or run on co2 and it held multiple shots. The daisy 990, the only chimera airgun I think ever made.

The daisy 953 uses 'clips' which you slide across the breech of the gun and I think push forward on a switch at the side to chamber a pellet from the clip. The clip holds 5 pellets. Consider where you are going to be shooting this thing too, co2 can be a bit loud indoors since you obviously wont be using it outside during the winter.

You're not entitled to decide what people are entitled to (oh the irony or is it hypocrisy?), maybe on CAF where you'd ban him at will or delete his post for expressing his opinion, but not here.

Simmer down sparky, no need to be so rude and aggressive! I prefer D&L, much better selection and excellent customer service!:D

Now lets not SPAM the thread and lets get back to the topic of discussion!

I would recommend the Hammerli/RWS 850 Magnum its a reasonably priced bolt action C02 rifle, it's accurate and it is quality built. Just my opinion, there are lots of good rifles to choose from it can be difficult to narrow it down to just one.
