Im still looking at getting my first handgun. Seems like maybe a .22 might be good to start with, although I do have a fair bit of exprience with centrefire handguns. The cost of buying a .22 pistol and the ammo cost is hard to pass up. Cost of gun and ammo is a factor since I am in post secondary schooling right now. Dont want to spend any more than 350 before tax.
At the moment, I am looking at:

New Ruger Mk.3 standard
Used Smith and Wesson 422
Used Colt huntsman
New Heritage single action revolver

I also like the Walther p22 and Sig mosquito, but those are out of my price range.

Any suggestions? I could maybe be persuaded to go centerfire if it was cheap enough, like a Norinco 1911 or Hi-Point. At the moment, ammo cost has me leaning towards .22 however.

I have both a P22 and a MK3 22/45. The P22 is a bit more picky where as the MK3 isn't. I would recommend whatever feels better in your hand and is in your price range.

With the price of 45 ammo compaired to 22 is roughly 50 rounds to 500. I enjoy shooting my 45's more than the 22's but go through way more 22 ammo due to the cost.

Im thinking that getting a good quality .22 handgun now, which I can afford to buy and shoot, and then going for a good quality centrefire later on is the best plan.

If your plan is to get a 1911 of some sort later on, you could get the Ruger MKII/45 (I think that's the model) Same grip stance as the 1911, so both guns would feel the same in hand, but with the known quality of the MKII, MKIII ect.
Interested in what you decide.

I recommend a Sig Sauer P226 - the classic .22 model. Yes, a little more expensive than some, but the upside is you get a great pistol that, when you get some more cash, you can buy the kit to upgrade to a centerfire model. Check out questar if you're interested in that.

P226 classic is WAY over his budget.

You might want to check the Buckmarks. I have a Buckmark Countor and obsolutely love it. Easier to field strip than the Ruger too ;)

I paid $510 delivered to my door for mine, but there are other models which are less expensive.

Have a look also at the Beretta Neos. Heard great thing about it, if you can accept the futuristic looks.

look for an older ruger mkii or mkiii in the bull barrel with adjustable sights. nicer shootin than the tapered one and i've yet to see one wear out.

Agreed, and I include the Mk.1 as well. Personally, I wouldn't touch a P22 or a Mosquito with a barge pole. I've heard way too many people's bad experiences with these.

There's a S&W 18-2 advertised on Ellwood Epps for $219. Not much better than a K-22 S&W. There were two M 18's for sale, but I bought one of them today. The one for $219 has some minor pitting on one side of the barrel. It's got diamond magnas, so that puts it prior to 1968. Sounded like a good shooter.

The K-22's come with a 6 inch barrel (M17) or a 4 inch barrel (M18).

i bought a revolver from a shooter here in quebec who has been shooting for 30 years now he has participated in almost every single shooting sport

he gave me the advice to buy a ruger 22/45
since it replicates the 1911 grip and controls, it would be nice practice
plus it's usually not picky on ammo

i followed his advice and just bought a 22/45

cant wait to get it

If you can get a nice used 422 with two mags for under your $350 limit I'd strongly suggest it. My own 422 has been a delight to shoot, groups as tightly or better than most non match grade .22's that I've tried and has a 45'ish style grip angle. They are very nice guns.

Another option is a basic S&W 22A. Brand new they around $380 from some of the sponsors here.

Just my luck. I call to purchase the 422 this morning and I was informed it was sold. It had one mag for 299. It was in mint condition too. Dammit!

I paid 379 new for my buckmark camper a few months ago. It is really a great gun. Rubber grips, heavey barrel, adj. sights. fiber optic. one mag.

I have a 22/45 and a STI Spartan 1911.

The only resemblance between the two is in the grip/frame angle. Other than that they do not feel anything alike. Different trigger (of course), different safety, different slide lock operation. The grips themselves feel nothing alike. Mags on the 22\45 do not drop free and the gun has a 'mag safety'.

All in all a stock 22/45 does NOT replicate a 1911 in any facet other than the grip angle.

That being said the 22/45 can be mod'ed to be a reasonable 'practice pistol' for IDPA/IPSC type shooting.

I have started my own project to improve my 22/45. I removed the 'mag safety' which allowed the mags to drop freely. I plan to mod the slide lock and add a set of 1911 wood grips next. After that I will add a BladeTech holster and set of mags pouches and I should be good to go.
