I was able to take the last 3 days of deer season off to take my 14 yrold daughter out to the wilderness camp I had set up earlier in the season with my son. Having taken 2 deer and a bull elk on that trip I was hoping to get Shayleen onto a good buck with her new rifle. After a 1.5 mile hike from the road we were in position on a drainage and this buck showed himself nicely for a 120 yard shot. Two hits to the vitals and this fine bush deer was in camp. Rifle is a 7mm-08 in a m70 FWT shooting 140gr Nosler solid bases. We had a blast playing crib, cooking , telling stories and I passed on the 3 bucks I saw, so be it. Getting therse kids out hunting and seeing the determination to learn and be out in the wilderness is worth not filling my tag this year.

She has come a long way from her first gopher kill 3.5 years ago, which kind of scares me

I don't have kids myself, but my hunting partner has been bringing his 2 boys out for the last few seasons. It's been really enjoyable for me to watch the boys learn and grow. Congrats to your daughter... and her proud Dad!

Serious Kudus for you, dad! Very fine thing to get your daughter interested in shooting/hunting. The smiles say it all! Congratulations to you both. Eagleye.

Congratulations to both Dad and daughter! Great looking buck and it looks like it was a very positive hunting experience. Another good year!

Thanks for all the good wishes and comments. Having these two kids hunt with me has really made me evaluate my reasons for hunting, what makes for a successful hunt and how lucky I am to have these experiences. before they came around I was a pretty selfish hunter, where the success of a hunt was only measured if I took a "trophy animal"
While I still bust my but and put on the boot miles like before, spending time playing crib in a wall tent with your teenage daughter is a pretty good memory too.

^ Who wins? :)

Btw, a buddy that I work with has had the same type of deal going with his twin daughters, the last couple years.

Now that is apparently pretty interesting! A lot of twin-sibling rivalry there and the two girls always want to one-up each other. He hasn't shot any deer for the last couple of years, but his girls have shot a few dandys.

He says it's the best hunting experience he's ever had. More fun than hunting for himself.

Looks like Battle has some competition coming up in the family. Good to see. Can't wait for my kids to start packing, I'll glad let them shoot everythign just to see that look on their face.

Good on ya for making it fun for her.
Congrats!
