I am looking to buy a range finder for my father for Christmas but I know nothing about them, so here I am. I would like to know what the CGN community would recommend in the $250-$300 range.

My father already has a range finder but constantly complains that once the bush gets even a little thick it fails and reports distances that are obviously wrong.

For $250-300 your not likely going to find anything that works better than he has now IMO. I have a Leica 1200, love it but more than double the $. I would check with cameraland and see if they have anything in a demo.

X2 the lowest priced product that works real well is from Nikon or the $399.99 Bushnells
Wholesale sports has a 10% discount on every thing in the store till midnight to nite, online shopping only. FS

I got my Bushnell 1500 Elite used for $360 and am quite happy with it. It has a "brush mode" that works very well for peeking through the trees. In moderately heavy rain or snow it will range trees to 400yd, bright sunlight 6-800yds and yesterday it was cloudy and I got a repeatable reading off a tree @ 1428yd.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I went for the Bushnell Sport 600. It is a a modern version of what he has so it should be a little better, but mainly because it is more than half the size and weight of the one he has now.
