CZ sp-01 shadow advice

I need some advice, I will be receiving my new shadow very soon and cant wait to use it. But here is my question, as any new gun they usually full of gunk/grease. Would I have to detail strip everything and re lube or just wipe and lube the main oiling points?

What is your advice???
 
Field strip it, take grips off and wipe it well. Oil the usual - rails, trigger bow, long shiny middle section of inner-under slide, barrel lugs, slide where lugs go. Assemble and put a drop on the barrel where you can see it when slide is back and forward.

Cycle the slide a few times.

Get extra mags... get 11# recoil and 13# main springs - if plan on competing...

Practice at home - dryfire WITH DUMMY rounds - PUT AMMO AWAY when at home...
Practice mag reloads...

It's covered in thin oil when it first arrives but not "gunk". On my first time I just wiped off the outside and shot three boxes through it. No issues other than the shipping oil isn't all that great a lube and it suffered from a lack of ejection force that dribbled brass onto my forearm and stovepiped occasionally. Once I got to field strip the upper end, clean it and lube with proper oil it ran like a champ with the brass arcing out about 3 feet to the side. So by all means field strip, clean and oil if you have the time Even a shot of brake cleaner into the action that sits in front of the trigger and then dabble on some good oil so it recoats everything would not be a totally bad idea. Same around the trigger hoop you can see that connects the trigger to the rear action.

You've got a great gun there. Mine's a keeper for sure. Just watch out for thumping the FO front sight against anything. Somehow, somewhere I managed to thump mine against something and it broke. It's a pretty small bit of steel in a few spots and won't take much abuse. In particular watch it if you ever shoot through a window or frame style of opening in any sort of match. That setup is a sure sight breaker if you let the recoil thump it into the upper part of the frame. Stick it through far enough that it's your wrists that will take any punishment. They'll heal, your sight won't.... :D
 
Regular field strip, cleaning and lubing before shooting. That grease is just there to protect the pistol during shipping over seas (salt water in the air).

+1 on the recoil and mainspring, but only use that recoil spring when you're shooting light (<135 IPSC PF) reloads, otherwise use the standard 15# recoil spring or you'll batter the hell out of your gun.

I'm new to firearms and have a new Shadow as well. Is there any good picture or video tutorials for this and other how to change the springs? I imagine it would be best to get a gunsmith to install the recommended competition hammer?

As above, but do a thorough cleaning of the slide/barrel assembly; I found a few small metal shavings in mine. Excellent pistol, you're going to love it.
 
Then read the thread below on Shadow ####, and get some ###y colored aluminum grips for you new baby!

The CZ's have a bit of a different design in that the top slide runs on inside rails, rather than outside.... so don't forget to put a drop of oil on the rails.

I had to get a reasonably priced gun, it's nice that it is so well regarded.

The cost of the gun was the smallest part of what I've spent so far: Black Badge course, ammo, rental gun as my gun mags weren't all in yet, range membership, new mags, mag holders, Bladetech DOH holster, and CR belt.

And of course I've already been told that I should get a new 15# or 13# main and 11# recoil springs. As well have a gunsmith put in a competition hammer, recurve trigger, Re profile and Polish Disconnector and associated surfaces, Re Profile Slide Stop For Magazine release with Heavy / Long Bullets, and Polish underside of Disconnector rail and break breach face edge. How much is this gonna cost?!!

This is not a cheap sport /hobby is it? ;)
 
A lot of the things they told you to get are not needed for the Shadow.

  • It comes stock with the competition hammer.
  • You have to use it with the stock trigger for some shooting events so switching it isn't an option. Besides it's fine as it comes.
  • Mine works fine as it comes with up to 147gn bullets. No need to do anything to the slide stop in that regard.
  • Magazines on the Shadow fall free without any mods required. Other CZ's use a bowed spring that retains them but the Shadow uses a flat separator that does not rub on the magazine.

What is a good idea is to go for the light main spring and possibly to get the sear and disconnector contacting surfaces polished. Or just let shooting it naturally polish those surfaces for a couple of thousand rounds.

The light main spring will greatly reduce the trigger pulls for both the first double action as well as the followup single action shots. Highly recomended.

As for the recoil spring you only want to go lighter if you use the lighter bullet ammo that does not kick the slide back as hard as with the heavier loads. Otherwise you can hurt your gun. 115 and 124gn rounds are by far the more common anyway so it's not a bad idea to customize it for that weight and just avoid the heavier bullet options and use the lighter recoil spring.

You don't really need to change anything on the shodow and start enjoy a high quality stock firearm. I never never did anything to my 75B and it shoot as just as good. Man if you want to spent more money on the shadow, you may want to buy a Tanfoglio stock II instead.

I agree, Shadow is a fine gun as it comes, only things I did to mine - polished barrel's feed ramp, swapped recoil and hammer springs, replaced plastic for steel guide rod and applied grip tape.
