I need some advice from a few of you old timers :)

From what i've read, the cooey 84 is better than the newer 840, correct?

Which single shot 12g would be a better buy, a cooey 84, 840 or a baikal (model unknown) ?

The older 12 gauge cooey 84 has a 2 3/4 length chamber..model 840 has a 3 inch chamber.
Had a baikal ij-18 single in 20 gauge, it worked good and was fast to reload because of the barrel release style by the trigger guard. You can't really go wrong with any of them.Lots of parts in Canada for the cooeys tho.

The 84 barrels were full choke but the 840 may have come out with a modified choke near the end.The baikal would either have an IC (improved cylinder) or modified choke.Mod choke or less allows for shooting waterfowl using steel shot.

I have a IJ-18, older baikal, 29.5" chrome lined full choke barrel, very very nice gun to shoot, the only thing I didn't like is the open lever near the trigger guard which some times rub on my finger. The newer baikal should be advoid as my sport model has a very tough action, open and close not so smooth, but also has some good thing as you can select manual extraction or auto ejection, come woth three choke and vent rib barrel. Some said the newer baikal take time to smooth out the action but I didn't shoot enough to have it smooth. I think the Cooey 84 is a better gun over all.

The newer baikals require a half-dozen cases of shells before they get worked in. I shot about a half dozen cases through mine (vent rib sport model) and it smoothed right up.

Model 84 cooey is lighter in weight and came in both 2 3/4 and 3 inch chambers. I have lots of each to prove it.

Model 840 cooey was a good gun but is alot heavier in weight than the model 84. Not as stream line either

Baikal, dunno nothing about it but i remember that they were a bit clumpier and akward for me to handle.

Moral of this story, get yourself a model 84. Best there is, best there was, and best there ever will be for the single shot catagory. IMO

The 84 Cooeys and the early 840's had a steel hinge trunion compared to the plastic one on the later models. The plastic ones broke on a regular basis. The baikal is a well made shotgun. It is also hammerless compared to the cooey. Baikals can be had new not so for the Cooeys.

The Model 84 is the better shotgun,no queston.

in your opinion.

in mine, a Baikal is better than a Cooey.

if people ignore the nostalgia/fond childhood memories of growing up with them may be clouding their judgement, a Cooey was a cheap hardware store gun with plastic parts -- pretty much the lowest-end gun that existed both then and now.

yes, they work - but a Baikal is superior. oh, and the extra weight? thats because like most things Russian, its overbuilt and all steel. the Baikal hinge actions are stiff, but they smooth up after awhile. i would much rather have a stiff hinge action than a loose one.

one i looked at recently had a cheap plastic buttplate, plastic triggerguard, and a really sloppy lockup. how many models of Cooey hinge single bbl shotgun are there?

I think you must have picked up an 840. Winchester bought cooey and redesigned the 84, cheapened it up.

thanks for the input guys, I think im gona side with the baikal

Plastic parts on a Model 84?Do not know what shotgun you were looking
at but I assure you it was not a Model 84.All steel on a Model 84.Maybe a Model 840?

The Cooey 840 is a piece of garbage. I had 2 of them and the cheap plastic pivot plate broke on both of them and I had to order steel ones.

THE BAIKAL IS THE WAY TO GO....THE SAFETY IS MUCH BETTER FOR A NEW SHOOTER!!!you made the right choice.............

i need to save this pic so i can show people the next time i say 'i dont like the plastic _______ (triggerguard, hinged floorplate, sights, safety, etc)' and i get the inevitable response of 'modern plastics are as strong as steel. just look at the Glock'.
