Norinco M14 calibers

Some sharpie tried to convince the US Army to convert its M14s to 5.56 during the Vietnam War. It didn't get very far. IMHO, any cartridge based with the maximums of the .308 Win case dimensions would work (.243, 7-08, 6mm something, etc).

5.56 is more expesnive? I thought they'd be the same seeing as how they are both nato.

The Ruger Mini-30 is chambered in 7.62x39, which is a Russian caliber - the same stuff people run through their SKSes. It can be had for $200 or so for a case of 1120 rounds of cold war surplus.

The Norinco M-14S is chambered in 7.62x51 NATO / .308 Winchester. It runs about $20-25 for a box of 20 rounds, at least in my area.

The Ruger Mini-14 is chambered in 5.56 NATO / .223. It usually runs $10-12 per box of 20, or a case of 1000 for $500ish.

Any one of these choices is good, IMO. I own both a Norinco M-14S, and a Ruger Mini-14 and don't regret buying either one.

no love for the 6.8 mini??
my idea of an ultimate m14 would be a lrb m25 receiver, 243 win barrel
if it could be made in canada or imported cost would not be an issue for me

I've heard of people in the U.S converting their M14's to fire 300 WSM.

That would be a very nice setup for hunting bigger game at range.
