Hey Guys,

My parents are getting me a handgun for Christmas so I guess it's about time I make a decision on what to get!

In the past I've shot several different makes and models, from a Colt .45, S&W .44 Mag, Glock 9mm, etc. I don't have more than maybe 200 rounds through any handgun so my professional opinion doesn't count for much!

Long term I'd like to get into competitive shooting, but I'm not against buying a different gun at a later date.

Currently, I'm looking at a Sig 226 in 9mm, a Glock 34, maybe an STI 1911 but I'm looking for advice.

Budget isn't a priority, and I plan on picking up a .22 conversion kit depending on what I end up with.

Thanks for the help!

Start simple and get a quality 1911. You will get to understand how a handgun operates and how to completely disassemble it.

Many other "modern" handguns are almost impossible to detail strip.

Most quality 1911s are competition ready out of the box. And making modifications are extremely easy.

One of the more popular guns for production class IPSC competition is the CZ Shadow. As long as you take a large or extra large glove it'll fit you.

It doesn't hurt that it's a superb gun to shoot regardless of if you want to get into IPSC or not.

i can pretty well detail strip a glock with a broken plastic tine from a KFC fork.

if money is no object ask for several.
What kind of competitive shooting? ISSF IPSC, IPDA blah blah...
A Walther SSP is my ISSF dream gun.

or one of these IPSC thingys.

I'm a little too old to be adopted but if your parents feel the need, don't hesitate to PM me.

Wish my parents would buy me a handgun for xmas,,,,lucky man!!!! I have a Ruger SR9 and am very happy with it. Easy to shoot, easy to clean and a good starter pistol.

Sometimes I wish I could just have one of everything....

But alas, I'm not made of money! I guess I'll look into a few of the ones mentioned, probably my favorite would be on of the SVI's but that may be a little more than I'd be willing to ask for...

The different STI's on the other hand look awesome and the Sig is probably near the top of my short list!

Oh well, I still have to make it through a week of exams before I can drool over all of these.

If your parents are flush it's hard to go wrong with the sig 226. I've put hundreds of rounds thru by best friends and found it to be great platform. If not I'd check out the Glock 17 9mm or the G22 .40. You can grab one from Reliable or Canada ammo for around $700. I've got a G29 10mm and just love it. I also have a G35 .40 coming but that's still in the "But I'm mad now" mandatory registration loop. I can hardly wait to chuck some lead with that one. But the Glock is easy to maintain and can be easily upgraded.
Just my two cents, what ever your choice I'm sure you'll have fun. Be ware of the fill the safe addiction I have. He He He.

Damn that wesson is PURDY!

Actually, if I go 1911 I might go with something from STI, the Sentinel Premier looks like a solid candidate!

But probably one of my favorites (based on the look) is the Legend!

If you wanna get a good gun you can take into competing later and a .22LR conversion - get CZ Shadow and a Kadet upper. That'll give you 2 calibers - 9mm and .22LR and you can practice all you want and then compete later with an excellent gun for cheap. Later you'd most likely want a .40s&w or .45acp and 1911 guns are there to explore and enjoy. CZ and 1911 grips are quite similar in angle and you won't have to re-learn anything.
