Sask coyotes DOWN !!

Yes, Fassteel, in the picture they look healthy, but that doesn't tell the whole story.
You people who are living in the area, what will be the coyotes main source of food from now until the gophers come out?

Here is the main source, with pic eveidence. Lots of hear say on the net but its a different story when your out in the field.
Our gopher population is at an all time high and rabbits are every where, pretty much the staple diet of the coyote.

I took these jack rabbits sitting prone in a pasture one afternoon this summer. I only moved maybe 100 yards at a time. The hills are moving with them. These were taken in the same area I hunt in.
Plenty of rabbits, birds and deer in our area, nobody seems like they are hurtin.

Id rather see our tax paying dollars spent on a coyote bounty then see it fund a Regina ### parade or something stupid like that. Lots of new hunters are joining in on the hunt which only helps us gun owners.
Do some reading and you'll see that infact many states or counties have bounties on coyotes.
The bounty thins out the weak but its the weak ones that get desperate and kill farm animals, small dogs, cats, sheep ect...

Cheers!!

To those of you from the enlightened sections of Canada against a bounty system. Please come to almost any where in SK and buy a couple of sections of land.
Then purchase about 500 head of sheep and help feed these wonderfully wild dogs.
We need your help in this backward area of Canada. ;>).

That is truly awesome. Nice shooting. 9 dogs in one outing? Unbelievable! We are overrun with the darned things here too but instead of a bounty now we have a license system and a 2 tag limit per season. I know what you're thinking , what Liberal S.O.B came up with that wild idea, well believe it or not I sat across the dinner table one night at an outfitter friend of mine listening to 2 of his clients who are two of the top dogs in the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, who by the way were there on a guided wolf hunt, tell us it was they're suggestion to the gov't beurocrats to bring in a wolf/coyote tag system so the MNR could get an idea of the harvest rates in the province. Well my outfitter friend didn't say much but the look on his face said it all as did every other face at the table and these fellows(jackasses) were fast to defend themselves when someone finally started to tell them what nonsense they had brought about. Since then I have not renewed my OFAH memebership and never will! As for a bounty? Damned good idea, it is way past due!:sniper:

Scot, thanks for the informaton on the rabbits. That answered the question I asked, as to what was their winter food source.
However, does this not coincide with my observations? We know the vast numbers of gophers will really keep them going in the summer, and they will raise large families.
We also know that rabbits are very cyclic in nature. Therefor, the rabbits will have their normal die off, probably sooner than later. And when the rabbits die off, so will large numbers of coyotes, as they loose much of their winter food supply.
Shoot all the coyotes you can, while you can.

I think he was saying nay to a bounty system being an effective method of population control. Counting the population before and after a bounty program would seem like the only way to accurately assess the results.

Well, around Saskatoon, we have no snow, and the poor bunnies changed color already. They are a nice bright white which kinda defeats their "if I freeze you can't see me" routine.

Those are some big Jacks and I agree with the parade idea. Or lack of it.

What are upland bird populations like in SK? Grouse, partridge, pheasants and turkeys are a favorite food of coyotes as I understand.

I'm jealous. I've been out a few times this year and have not even seen a coyote. I do see them sleeping along Hwy 155. I suspect my calling abilities do more harm than good.

There's an article on predator bounties in the December 2009 issue of Predator Xtreme magazine.

What is the bottom line of the article?
Is the bounty system good method of predator control, according to the article?

I did some reading after your post H4831 and the majority seem to say the same as you. Most experts said that it gave temporary relief in problem areas but as soon as the bounty ended coyotes quicky rebounded.
All I know is that the farmers around Moose Jaw have said many times to me that they loose alot of calves, farm dogs, ect... and for the time being a bounty may provide temp relief.

Coyotes have no wild predators, once a food source like rabbits drys up they dont just die, they wander into cattle pens, wander into cities, garbage dumps ect... and kill.
I think shooting them is a way better idea then poison, like they do gophers. Many hawks and eagles die after eating poisoned gophers.
I don't think anyone has an answer but in the mean time Im going to continue shooting them like have for the past decade or so..

Cheers!!

I've seen more Grouse (pintails) in the last couple weeks than I've seen in two years. Usually see one or two rabbits on my way to work (8 miles of gravel)
