Hey everyone,
So it seems I'm flip flopping everyday as to what gun I want. I had a few people on here try and talk me into a .22 as my first handgun. I went to the range, spoke to a few instructors there and fired a few more guns and realized very quickly a .22 is NOT for me, especially considering when you buy a .22 handgun you get two options. BUTT ugly, or unreliable as hell.

So I'm back to my original thought. Shell out the extra cash and buy a 9mm. I'm wondering if anyone here has any first hand experience with a norinco NP-22 (Sig p226 knock off).
While I would love a glock 17 or a beretta 92fs, the np-22 is less than half the price. But if it's half the quality and is going to break on me, forget it. I can't find any good, in depth reviews online.

Any advice?

If that's all you can afford go for it. But who has a new NP22 in stock? :confused:

I'd get a used Beretta if that was me :) or Taurus version! should be in line with the 'rinco price
 
Look at the Norinco CZ copy if you can find one as well. I have heard they are excellent as well. The Norinco copies of the Sig, CZ and their 1911 are the best of the handguns made by Norinco in my opinion.

A used beretta for the same price as a new norinco?! No way. Used beretta's I've seen on here are going for $700+.
A new Np-22 is $350 from Marstar, when they're in stock.

I guess it's just a matter of what deal comes first. NP-22's to come back in stock at marstar, or a good deal on a glock 17 or another 9mm..
 
There are good and reliable .22s out there.
Both the Browning Buckmark and the Ruger Mk111 are very well liked by their owners.
Either would be a great first.

For Norinco, the Sig copy is very good. That's the first 9mm I owned too and still a favourite.

I think those are on his "butt ugly" list. If you can get around the looks, a Ruger is a great pistol for anyone, beginner or not. I have a 22/45 and a Mk.II, both with 5.5" bull barrels and adjustable sights and I love them.

I have an NP-34 (the 228 clone) and it works very well. Around 1000 rounds so far through it and it is just needing a cleaning now. Feeds and fires 100% with the couple different loads I have tried and the SA trigger is pretty decent, with a fairly heavy DA pull. The DA pull has improved significantly as it has been used, though. Very good value for $350 IMO. If the NP22 is the same as the 34 it is a decent budget choice.

The Norc 1911's are fantastic guns. I have the police model and for the money I would say it is the best deal in a new handgun in Canada. I have never fired any of the other clones but have heard only good things. For under 500 bucks you can find a used Glock and it sould be a great option for a new handgunner. Very simple reliable handgun and there super easy to clean. Parts are cheap and plentiful. So my vote is Norc 1911 or Glock.

Those are indeed on my ugly list. The .22 is cheaper to shoot, but to get a decent one, like the p226 classic, I'll spend as much or MORE than I would for a brand new glock 17. So why bother.
I could get a walther p22 for a great price, ammo is cheap, but I've heard everywhere that they jam often and they break often.

That's what brought me back to just buying a 9mm. But do I go $600+ for a glock 17 or $350 for an np22.

Where are you finding used glocks for under $500? Cheapest I've seen so far is between $600 and $650 for a glock 17. I've been through pages and pages of handguns forsale on here. Nothing near $500.

Used Glocks in anything in the 'steal' priced area don't last long on the EE.

I just scored a used/exc 2nd gen Glock 22 off the EE for $500 shipped. Shot it last weekend and it's perfect.

Deals on used Glocks are out there.... Hope this info was at least helpful to you.... ;)

Second gen glocks all over the place not 3rd gen. Police Ordnance, My local shop sells these police turn ins that we all know haven't been used much at all. Some holster wear but thats it. 500 bucks. And you just missed Canam sale. 600 shipped plus gst is an amazing deal.
 
Norinco Nz-85B is the best value for the money.and also add Norinco CF-98 9mm pistol in this list too.it is a very very soft shooting pistol.
 
First off..... There are some really ugly .22's out there. IMHO the Buckmark is not one of them!

I would not hesitate to buy another Nork, of any stripe. You just can't beat them for price and reliability...... You may have to 'play' with them a bit to get them reliable, but thats what happens when you pay half what a brand name pistol costs.

If you buy a Nork 1911, Sig clone or a CZ clone, the available aftermarket .22 conversion kits will fit. They do cost about the same as the Pistol you are putting it on, but they make for cheap practice.

IMHO everyone needs a .22, just to work on the fundamentals. It is very difficult to train yourself to get over flinching, anticipating the shot, etc, etc, etc, if all you have is a centrefire pistol.

Buy a good quality used .22 pistol and shoot the hell out of it. You will get more shooting time out of a .22 than any center fire. 5000 rounds .22 $300.00 5000 rounds CF $2500.00+++
 
Thanks for the replies everyone.
In the end I picked up a used .22 that I got a great deal on. I picked up a walther p22 target model. I don't have the biggest hand so it feels good and it's one of two .22 guns that aren't butt ugly (the other being the p226 classic, which is way out of my price range.
Not to mention ammo is DIRT cheap. ($55 for 500rds) Great gun to start with and learn to shoot with and on top of that, learn the ins and outs of the mechanics of a gun.

Thanks again to everyone for their advice. When I can afford it down the line, I will buy a 9mm. Whether it's an np22 or a glock 17 or a beretta 92fs is to be decided.

And naa, sorry if I seemed snappy. No hard feelings =P

+1 These .22 handguns were actually the first ones I bought, and they have been very good to me.
